Seafoam?

I'll keep this one short.

What is it. Does it work. How do you use it? Are there times, situations, or motors, where it shouldn't be used? When should you use it, if at all?

Thanks for any help, and sorry if this topic has already been addressed elsewhere.

Re: Seafoam?

this is the method i use. then continue adding seafoam to your fuel. if you clean your carbs first, the seafoam will keep them clean.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

Re: Seafoam?

Thanks for the tip with the spray bottle. I was wondering about how to get it into sidedraft carburetors. The part about it smoking like a house on fire is very important. I was going to do this on my balcony with a trash can. I live in Germany and they are very oder & noise sensitive people. They would have called the environmental police on me for sure (no joke). I'll have to sneek off somewhere to do this.

I am in the process of bringing a old motor I bought back to life, and I believe they have souls, and as such should be treated well.

I will follow your suggestions and those I found on the company website, thanks to Major Woods.

Re: Seafoam?

Two at the moment, a 70's 7.5HP & a 80's 6.0HP, both from Johnson. I almost bought a older Johnson 20HP over the phone last night from the German Army, but backed out.

I realize that is not really old, at least not to me, but when I tell others the first thing they say is, that thing is over (place years here) old. Why don't you just buy a new one!

When I think of old, I think of the 20's, 30's and 40's. But maybe it is just me that is getting on in the years.

One I will keep and I plan on selling the other. Then again maybe I will keep them both and just through something else out of our basement. We live in an apartment at the moment and space is a premium, so I should sell one, but ...

My girlfriend is gone at the moment (comes home tomorrow) and when she left we had no motors here, now we have two, three would have been one too many. Although she is a very understanding sweetheart when it comes to my hobbies, she does have limits, as does our apartment. The basement is small & full and the one parking space we have in the garage has a half finished project boat parked there instead of her car.

Re: Seafoam?

Well I couldn't find “Sea Foam” anywhere here (Germany), or anyone who had ever heard of it for that matter.

I did find a product called “SystemMatched Engine Tuner” from OMC. It says it does the same thing “Sea Foam” claims to.

Anyone ever heard of it?

I could only get it in a spray can, but followed the directions on the can, which were pretty much the same as those T-Daddy gave me in a earlier post.

It said spray the whole can (a very large can) threw the Carb, and I only sprayed about three quarters of it.

You were right it smoked like a house on fire! I did this in a drum on my balcony and I was afraid the Fire Department was going to come, really.

It is a small 6Hp motor, do you think I should repeat the process with the rest, or should this be enough for the next couple of months?

Re: Seafoam?

Never mind the question.

The “SystemMatched Engine Tuner” from OMC seems to have worked great. Ran it hard all day, it never ran better.

TD, would it be okay to use your method, but not being able to take it out and run it WOT right away ( like, not until a few days later)?

Re: Seafoam?

I ran mine for about 5min. to warm it up, ran the OMC stuff through the system (about 5min.) let it set for about 30min, and then ran it hard for about 15min. till it quit smoking. The next day I ran it for 4hours at between half & full throttle, and trolled for about an hour.

It now runs smother at all speeds, and smokes less than before.

Re: Seafoam?

Maybe you can find Sea Foam in the spray can. It is called Deep Creep. I just brought a leaf blower back to life with this stuff. I use it regularly on all my power equipment.

Re: Seafoam?

I have a 1981 75 HP evinrude which seems to be running fine (just finishing to restore the boat so just got to use it twice on the water). I was thinking of doing the seafoam treatment, just because....Is there any possible risk on an older motor? should I just leave it alone since it seems to be strarting/running fine? if it ain't broken don't fix it?

Re: Seafoam?

So, would you use it the same way in an I/O? What is the "OMC stuff?" I am an OMC owner and would love to know what I am missing.

I couldn't find "Sea Foam" here (Germany), but I found a product called “SystemMatched Engine Tuner” from OMC.

It had the same benefits listed on the can as "Sea Foam", and the directions for use were similar.

The can is in English, is marked “OMC SystemMatched Parts & Accessories”, and it is made in “Beloit, Wisconsin”, so I would assume if you wanted it you could get it from a BRP/OMC dealer in the States.

I could only find it (OMC stuff) in the spray can version, so any benefits to the fuel system are limited. It would be better compared to the “Deep Creep” product from Sea Foam.

I would have rather used the stuff you pour in the gas tank, but ...

I haven't heard any responses, pro or con, about the use in I/O's, but the can says all marine engines, 2 & 4 cycle designs.

I think (in my humble opinion) you would be safe using either companies products. Correct me if I am wrong.

P.S. I used it on a Evinrude motor that is 27 years old (the motor has never been pulled apart), after using it I pulled the plugs and shined a flashlight in the holes to check the pistons and they are now free of all carbon build up. I took this to be a good sign. The plugs are also now running with a nice light brown color as opposed to the darker appearance they always had before. I also adjusted the “Lean <-> Rich” slow speed jet following the described method I was given in the “iboat” forum though, so this played a role in their new color (it was set to run too rich before).
