I have a 1957 Johnson 35hp. My question is, up to what year parts are interchangeable on this. Parts like the power head, flywheel, starter and so on. I'm looking to add a geared flywheel, starter and charging system to my engine. I don't have a manual yet so if any one can help a little that would be great.

The charging system was a optional belt driven DC generator in those days. Requires a voltage regulator that mounted in a spedial extra-deep cover on the junction box. Not many motors had them because the battery is only used for starting unless you have added stuff like lights etc.

The motor came out in 1951 and evolved from there. There are tons of similarities and many more tons of differences all the way up into the late '70s. For your question, 1957-59 would be pretty applicable. 1956 and earlier was 6 volt and no generator was available yet. The flywheel hub was different on the 40hps, along with many other parts.

In 58 there were 2 different blocks used for the 35hp, in 59 it appears only one was used and it was not the block used in 57. Internal parts and most of the bolt ons should swap.

While the electric start is a worthy addition to your motor I would'nt bother with the generator. They really dont put out that much juice and are just dead weight in my opinion. If a motor has it, I will leave it. but I would never go out of my way to install one. My 57 evinrude 35 will start 50+ times easy on a fully charged battery.

It is true that they only put out 10 amps. But that is 4 amps more than most newer motors. Yes, it is also true that it has to be running about 1/4 throttle before it puts anything out.

The generator is a worthwhile addition if it is an inconvenient pain to charge the battery, such a when the battery has to be removed and taken home from the lake to charge it.

The generator was used on all electric shift 40hp motors. The catch is that the '57 Johnson takes a special mounting bracket for it because of the hood mounting. Only the '57 and "standard" '58 red and white models use that bracket. The '58 Super Quiet model is different, as is the '59 and up.

So can I use the 40hp generator if I can find one? I'm a machinist so fabricating a bracket shouldn?t be problem, especially if I had a picture to work from.

The DC generators were all the same, even the ones for the V-4 motors. However, the V-4 takes a different pulley and belt and the mounting bracket was part of the crankcase casting. 35 and 40 are same except for the brackets which varied according to the hood style.

Jon Vick, please start your own thread re your engine and we can help.

Both of you, I have the parts manual if you want it. If yes PM me the model # and your email address.

Wait. I just noticed this thread is 3 years old. Sigh.

Yes, that motor should run at 24:1 Plugs are J6C. Try any of these sources for parts.
