I have decided to install a stereo in my 1995 Sunbird. I need some recommendations for marine grade speakers. I want them to be very loud. I am planning on hooking up an amp to them. I prefer 6x9s but will take a look at whatever yall recommend as long as they are VERY LOUD. Thanks for everything guys.

No way am I gonna cooperate with such an evil objective. It is bad enough (no, too bad) that we have to put up with blasting racket in our neighborhoods and on the roads without some thoughtless persons (I ain't calling any names here) intruding on one of our last refuges of peace and the gentle sounds of nature alone.

I have to agree !!!
Peace and tranquility is what my family seem to enjoy the most.
No stereo in our boat. We can take a small portable if we ever feel the need for additional noise.
The only noise I enjoy is the family conversation out there.

I prefer 6x9s

6x9 speakers were only made to fit into tight areas where normal round speakers would not. They are by far less efficient than standard round speakers of even much lesser quality.

VERY LOUD

How big is your boat where you need to crank your music in order to hear it? Me, I am within 4 feet from a speaker at any given time on my boat. Are you so deaf you can't hear music from 4 feet away?

This poor guy!! while I agree that loud music is a nuisance, this guy is new to the site and I wouldn't be surprised if he never comes back.

To the original poster,
Boating is alot like golf. Proper etiquette is a must and people don't like it when someone doesn't follow the rules of etiquette. Being respectful of others on the water is big! Mind your wake, don't cross behind a boat if they are trolling for fish. Noise pollution is also frowned upon. Please take the comments in this thread as a lesson in etiquette and not a personal attack.

I am sure we will all welcome Ryan to the board but the Loud Noise played on boats is just wrong. Out here in California on inland lakes and rivers it is getting real bad. They mount the speaker on the racks they store their Boards on then they play rap noise with songs no family should have to listen to. It time for states to pass the same laws as for motor vehicals, if you can here it 25 feet away it is a automatic citation.

I love the sounds of the wildlife and the buoys and the water slapping against the hull but one loud radio can spoil the entire day.

you only need enough to hear it on your boat, other than that you are infringing on my rights, for peace and quiet.

I like the audiobahn marine speakers. They don't make them anymore but can still be found for sale on many sites. I bought the 6.5" with the big horn tweeter in the middle. They are loud and the tweeter projects the sound great so you can still hear it while in the water. I think they have some on ebay for about $75.

Nearly every boater on this forum has a radio in their boat and they use it responsibly. Next time you are on the water, especially in the evening hours when the skiing, boarding, jet skis, and other high speed activity settles down, just sit and listen to the sounds. You will soon learn that voices carry over water for great distances. Nobody wants to hear "thump - thumpety thump - thump" which is not music anyway. It is simply noise. Music has notes -- thumps are electrical impulses. I'm with the others here. You don't need the amp since you are in an area smaller than any room in your house and about the same size as your car.

I would just like to thank those who gave a legitamate answer to the question posted. To those who want peace and quiet I promise not to blast my music to close to you or your family so that all parties are satisfied. I just want to ask all of those who want the peace and quiet on the water...Whats the difference in me playing tasteful country or oldies on my boat VERY LOUD and someone who puts a massivly loud exhaust on there boat and goes hauling but down the waterway? Thanks,

RYAN

Nothing. I feel the same about a loud exhaust.

..who puts a massively loud exhaust on there boat and goes hauling [butt]..

There are states (mine included) which make it illegal to have above water-level exhaust for that very reason. And is there such thing as tasteful country? ;) I think most view noise on the water as just that, country, blues, death metal or even talk radio.

Please don't take it personally, Ryan. Noise pollution is a pet peeve with many of us here. It really doesn't matter whether it is tasteful oldies, Rap, Beethoven, loud exhausts or shouting and screaming.

If it intrudes it is rude. It denies the environment to many who have nowhere else to go and it drives many to other places.

Normal conversation can be heard clearly as much as 1/2 mile away on the water at night.

Thanks for keeping your music at a respectable level and distance. :)

In that case I've been pretty happy with these.

They cost some coin but they are plenty loud. Very clear and clean music at lower levels as well.

Poly Planar offers a nice two or four channel amp that can be found for a decent price.

Agreed, I'll never understand people blasting music on the water any more than I can people who boat at night with fifty thousands spotlights onboard ruining their night vision. listen to your music, but respect those who don't want to hear it. I enjoy sittin on my boat listenin to Jimmy Buffett, but this is in the evening when I'm relaxing and the Lake is quiet enough that I can have the stereo turned wayyy down, and have no problems hearing it.

Now, back to your question. 6x9s aren't very good speakers, 6.5" standard car speakers will work just fine for what you want to do. Stay away from the thumpity thump woofers and huge amps. Makes no sense on a boat, actually makes no sense anywhere.

Read this, especially the most common cause. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus I got mine from working around jet engines. Believe me, you do not wany it. Just imagine a very high pitched squeal in your head that never stops. Real common with former band members.

... i'd take a good look at Polk Marine grade speakers. i've got mine married to a Kicker amp and they have held up very well. plenty of reserve volume for those days when your at home working on the boat while cranking it up a bit :)
