Hey just was thinking of installing a small system on our new boat. What are some cheap ways of going about doing this ? I dont need to vibrate the nuts loose on the boat. Just want some tunes out on the water.

Would a car type work if i put it in the glove box ?? And are all speakers some what water resistant ? Never done a stero before. Not looking to spend a wad of cash either. Cheap is what im going for here.

I would spring for the cheapy marine-grade radio at least. Most car stereo components are not meant to get wet and are less corrosion resistant. It's all about lifespan of the radio. Spend a little more now or buy another car stereo in the future.

If in salt water then a marine radio is recommended if you want it to last more than a year or so. If on fresh water then a car deck would be fine if its protected from the environment.

Marine speakers will be required either way. Car speakers will not survive in a boat. I picked up a pair of Pyle 6 1/2" 2 way marine speakers for $10 in a surplus store.

i bought a cheap unit--99.00--but could not hear it on a float 5 feet from the boat and had to install an amp--go ahead and spend a little extra for a higher wattage radiuo head and use marine speakers

Ghetto blaster with a 12 volt accessory plug under the bow works well for us on the few occasions that we want noise while we are out.

Wish I would have seen this before. I've pulled, thrown away and replaced more stereos and speakers like that than I care to think about.
If everything is protected from direct weather and you're in fresh water buy whatever you want. Just make sure it is a decent name brand(Sony, pioneer, alpine, JVC, clarion etc). It'll probably last as long as you have your boat or until you want to upgrade to something newer or nicer. If the speakers can be splashed go with a decent marine speaker. The leads and spiders are rubber coated, and the voice coil is sealed. It'll be worth as longevity and sound goes.

Everyone says they don't need to be loud but the fact is you're in a boat... You need to have the ability to play loud if you plan on hearing it. You pay for what you get.

I bought the Pyle stereo and 5 1/4" speakers like the one at Overton's from a dealer on Ebay. I also bought a 10" Pyle subwoofer and 150 watt amp. For about $300 including building boxes for the woofer and one set of speakers to mount under the dash, it sounds pretty good. We play it while anchored and swimming and outside the boat it still sounds good. I guess it's all up to how much you want to spend and how loud you need it.

Ah man I just ordered my radio from Overtons. Does anyone else have this problem?

go on ebay and purchase a combo pack,,you should be able to find a stereo, 4 speakers and face cover for around $100.00,,I've seen them and this how I purchased mine. Pyle,Dual are good brands, make sure the individual speaker weight is at least 30-40OZ per speaker.

Price is king for this stuff. I'd buy marine components, but only if they were cheap. It would take 10 minutes a side for me to swap out my 6x9s, and the base tubes come out for the winter. Like other posters have said, if you have a cover for your head unit, cheap audio stuff is fine. On a small freshwater pleasure craft, if your stereo gear is getting wet, you got bigger issues!

Texashemi, you might want to define just what you mean by "cutting out". If it's operating intermittantly while you're sitting still, that's a bummer. But, if it's skipping while you're jumping chop or wakes, well even a very high end player probably has a tough time with some of that.
