Vertical surfaces will not need much most likely.

Is the boat painted or gel coat?

If it is gel coat you may compound

Horizontal may need more. Start light on the grit and work your way up.
Start on a small out of the way area in case you mess up.

Do a small spot, and wait to see if it comes back to fade. When the gel coat is flat, it may be time to paint.

What did you already use to make the small area look good?

It's hard to say, since you didn't say how bad it is, but I'd get the fine compound and see if it works, if not then get the a coarser grit, after using the coarse grit go over it again with the finer one.

I did mine yesterday, I'm going to allow it to absorb and then polish it. It looks good right now though, and surprisingly it worked great as a cleaner too.

Well, just finished doing my boat with vaseline. Best 3 dollars I ever spent on the boat and I still have enough to do it another 6 times by the looks of it. Letting it absorb in the sun right now and will wax it up during the week. I have got some before and after photos and will post them when I get a chance. Looks great so far.

Re: Buffing A 30 Year Old Boat

I took mine out on the water for several hours today, with a nice coat of Vaseline on the blue part of my boat, and the vertical edge of my topsides, the water rolls right off HAHA. Looks great, I expect to remove and excess over the next few days and then I'll use this PTFE magical polish I have on top.

I also 303'd my vinyl and plastic interior, and my wife was wondering why I made the boat slippery :D

Re: Buffing A 30 Year Old Boat

Well we did not have the luxury of good boating weather today. Took a look at the lake and saw white caps with 3ft waves and a lot of swells. The few boats out there around the size of ours were getting thrown around quite a bit. Just no fun. My boat looks a million bucks right now. One of the neighbors thought we had it re-painted !!! I did the entire boat on all surfaces. You can see it shining from the end of the street right now. Planning to give it a coat of turtle wax during the week. Hope it works O.K.
Glad you had a good boating day.
Ken.
