But in their defense, their arms are usually still pretty short in relation to their torsos. My 4 year old son tries to wipe, but he can't physically reach all the way to the area.

I totally lucked out, my son decided at age two he would go poopy on the potty. #1 took a little while longer, but he was all trained by 2.5.

Not buying diapers and pullups is a godsend!

Amen. Our youngest is fully potty trained at 2.5. Not to say he won't have a pee accident everyonce in a while. The middle son took for ever to potty train. I believe he was getting close to 5. Our oldest, (daughter) was 1.5-2 I believe. I guess it depends on the child to when it happens.

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." In the case of potty training...."You can lead a toddler to the potty, but you can't make him poop." LOL

Our younger boy is also going to be 4 in Oct and he's just getting the hang of it. Got him in pull-ups and he makes it to the potty 80% of the time. Good Lord will it be nice when we can be done with diapers completely (even though I only do the changing about 10% of the time:p)

Omg gross guys.

My wife is going to have a clause "I will 100% wipe all of our kids, for as long as they need it!"

Just remember..... They might be the one's that you'll one day depend on to wipe your own butt. So grin and bear it!

Re: Finially potty trained!!

They're all different. I've seen kids potty trained so young I could hardly believe it and I've seen them bumping up on Kindergarten age, before they get the idea.

My little man tends to be a bit late on a few things, but once he gets them figured out, he's off and running. He got the "pee pee in the potty" thing at about 3, with very few accidents once he figured out what to do. "Poopy on the potty" took about another five months, but he only had a couple of "accidents" after that. He even does a pretty decent job of "the paperwork." I still put him in a pullup at night and we are working on not wetting himself at night.

One of the things that I did to overcome his reluctance to tell me when he had to poo, was to keep some gummy bears in the house. I like them for him, because they don't have a ton of sugar and can be used as a reward. I invented the term "special treat" and he got one every time he pooed on the potty. He did try to "play me" for awhile to get a treat, but soon learned that he actually had to do the deed to get the candy.

What worked with my 2.5 year old was rewarding him with Hotwheel cars. He loves cars, and when I put the reward out there that if you go in the pot, you get a new car, he jumped right on it. They're less than a dollar so it didn't cost me a whole lot of money. When he started getting the idea, then I pushed the reward criteria to going all day without an accident. It worked like a charm. After a while he started taking his older cars and rewarding himself after he used the potty. LOL

Probably not two years, but it could be as long as a year and a half..

Our daughter had two years of preschool, starting when she was about 3 years and 4 months. They required that children be potty trained. When we signed her up, she had... let's say the... liquid component under control, but was struggling with the... solid component. Needless to say, mommy and daddy were sweating bullets. As I recall, she got trained with about two weeks to spare.

And yeah, it was nice to stop buying those consarn diapers!

Luckily for us our daughter was good to "go" at 3 and a few months. Sure was nice not to have to buy diapers again! (great for oil spills btw)

Our challenge was to get her to go outside in the woods while camping or boating "emergency". She's got it now...."but where does it go???" she would ask.....

Re: Finially potty trained!!

I have a boy that will turn 4 in January who will use the potty when convenient for him. He has accidents regardless if he is waring nothing, underwear, pull ups, or a diaper. When asked why he didn't go he just says "I was playing". So far we have not found any magical reward that will help him change his attitude. He is a strong willed kid who I'm sure will give me and my wife many more challenges as he gets older.

congrats my youngest just turned 3 and he does great at daycare but comes home and just does what he wants in the pullup even reminding him to go. He is still doing better than the other 2 boys did all around.

How true that is,wait till they have grandkids and it starts all over. We have one down and two to go when we get them for over night you can hear come and wipe me! You just got to love them. Congrats on the big event.:D

Try to figure out how long it usually takes him to have to "do the deed" after eating or drinking. You may be able to achieve success by simply putting him on the potty at the right time. If it works, he will soon learn to let you know when he has to go.

Also, if you are leaving him in pull-ups, hoping to avoid messes when he goes, try getting him out of them. Put him in underpants and let him mess himself. Sometimes they get the idea then, because its uncomfortable and they do feel a little bit of embarassment.
