Nice find!! What is the make and year of the boat? It looks like it's in decent condition.

I don't know what model or year it is but it's a Glastron. The guy said he was going to look for the pink slip and give it to me later.

Then we placed the engine hoist on top and left it overnight.

The next day, the transom was traced using the old transom as a template and cut out.

that green is zinc primer.

The top was shaved at an angle to fit boat's angle.

Just wondering how you pulled the transom out. Did you run a wire down through the inside of the hull into one of the bolt holes to be able to pull it up?

A cable was wrapped around in through the hole and it was jacked up using the engine hoist.

Nice work dude. I'll be doing my transom over the winter or early spring.

Hopefully mine just pops right out...

I did around the rivets with one of these and the rivets came out looking like new...and easy on the hull.

We decided to glass the top of the transom. Don't know if it was a good idea or not.

The glass was measured and pre-cut.

We used poly resin. It was poured in an ice cream container and mixed. We just applied one coat of resin on the transom then applied the fiberglass over it. We didn't sand the wood, so I don't know if that affects the glass from adhering to the wood.

My dad then began to get all weird. He had some kitty hair left over from another project (the first console we were gonna use) and started coating the transom with it. Then he applied resin over it.

Then he got even more weirder and decided to apply some black oil based caulking/sealer kinda stuff that's used on aluminum sheeting for roofs around coastal areas on the transom. His argument was that it will prevent water from getting stuck in between the transom. I highly advised against it, but he did it anyways.

Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

Just wondering how you cut the opening for the drive. Did you drop the cut wood in and mark the bolt and drive opening holes?

If the black stuff is used on aluminum flashing them it shouldn't react with the aluminum. Not sure how easy it will be to get out by the next guy tho :)

I'll probably glass the top of my transom as well to stop any water getting in there. My current transom is pretty ratty in that area.

What do you plan on doing with your old straight 6?

We used the old transom as a template and simply traced it out. Then my dad used the jigsaw to make the angles. We didnt shave off anything around the edges so the transom went in very tightly. If youre gonna glass the top or sides shave off how ever much youre gonna add

First, i'm gonna check to see which engine has better compression. Then, I'll use the one with the highest compression and rebuild the other one to keep as a spare for when the other one gives out.

Were those 160 or the 165? I wonder what the difference is. Please take pics of your rebuild as I might be doing the same.

They're both 160's. The rebuild is still a few months out, but I will definetely take pictures.

Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

I've been without internet for a while now. Since then, I have flipped the hull, applied gluvit, painted the bottom and flipped it back up. I have alot of catching up to do with pictures, so I'll do that tomorrow.

I'll pick up where I left off. Wired brushed the aluminum.
transom.jpg

You can see all the corrosion there was.
transom2.jpg

Taped up with aluminum tape on the outside and fixed the corrosion with steel epoxy from the inside.
transom3.jpg

Had to tape up some more.

Re: 22' 1968 Starcraft Islander

Trasom corrosion repaired.

transom7.jpg

Then primed with ZC.

transom8.jpg

I think it came out pretty good for as bad as it was before.

transom9.jpg

Then applied Gluvit before setting the transom in.

transomgluvit.jpg

Couldn't take pictures while putting the trasom in but my Dad grabbed one side and I grabbed the other and just slipped it in.
It didn't go in as easy as we hoped for, but it went in. Since the transom was glassed, we could not trim and adjust it. We didn't bother to measure fit before actually putting it in and so we payed the price.
My dad had to hammer it in.

slidingtransomin.jpg

Then it was in after some elbow grease.

Then we moved on to cleaning the hull again. We used a vacuum at first.
cleaningbow.jpg

Then moved on to scrubbing and using compressed air.

cleaning.jpg

All the wood had to come out in order to properly clean and prep for the Gluvit.
And finally, it felt like this moment would never come.
applyinggluvit.jpg

We didn't apply gluvit to the rivets on the stringers. Just all the other ones.

Nice job EvilDoc

you and the pops are rockin and rolling...looks like it ought to be a bad ***** tincan when your all done, great score on the other boat freebie mercruiser etc....hey before you remove it from the other boat TEST IT....test the outdrive shifting and see if the impeller is good (use a giant bucket of water to see if it sucks water in thru the intake ports on the outdrive)

that will be real cool if it is all GOOD and happy!

also check teh outdrive fluid to see if its milky....if it is it easier to repair it while its out instead of fixing itafter its been reinstalled...

just adding in a few thoughts ........sometimes people get excited and rush ripping parts out etc.....I know from EXPERIENCE in that LOL
