OK, moved up to a boat we can overnight in. Our JackRussel, Lucy really wants to go...so says my wife. So, when overnighting on your boat, with your pets, where do they poop? Anywhere, and just clean it up? In a Depends? Hold them over the side and have them go on command? (You'll have to teach me that one!)
So, if you go offshore with your dog, how do they go about doing their business?? Thanks, Rick

Rick although the comando suggestion was funny . They make products for just this type of situation called piddle pads or training pads depending on where you get them . Check any pet store even wally world . The trick at that point is training the pup to use the pad instead of going outside in the grass . Theres even a new gimick product I have seen commercials for that is made to look and feel like grass to them for people who work durring the day . You just have to drain it and rinse as where the piddle pads I would just wrap up toss into a garbage bagg and put in the appropriate recepticle when you get back to shore .

Re: Dog poop...

Does the dog have a nightly routine, before he goes to bed and morning.
Its rare that ours has to go after bedtime and is usually good through 6.30:)

the wife and I just had this discussion (argument) because i would like to overnight next season now that we got the hang of things this year. my dog loves the boat and i love my dog so shes definitely coming with us. i was thinking of trying the training/piddle pad but putting it on the swim platform and walking her through the transom door on her leash so she feels like shes "outside". of course i might be givin her more credit than due in the brains department.

Piddle pads come with a plastic frame. This allows you to take it out when the dog needs it and store it away (maybe on the swimdeck) when not needed

I used to have a miniature Dotson and she would go in the cat box. She learned to do it on her own. Maybe she learned it from the cat. If your dog is a small one you could teach it to go in one.

piddle pads are ok, but Lucy seems to be like Tasha, she does not want to do anything to displease you. so it could be hard to tell her it is ok to use the piddle pad. she may just wait until she has no choice, as to where she goes. then just clean it up, with out fuss.

that is what that fancy washdown pump is for.

Doesn't everyone have one of those fancy washdown pumps??.....:D

So far, from the replies, I could:

1)Throw her overboard and let her tread water 'till she does her business....:(

2)Walking her off the plank, er transom door...:(

3)Make sure her routine includes a night on the boat, 25 miles from shore...:(

4)Buy and get her to use a cat box....:(

5)Or...just let her go and do her business, then a little washdown and out the scuppers it goes. God knows, plenty of blood, fish guts and the like on that deck, so what's a little poop to hurt??

Still up for some ideas.....thanks!

I vote for a Depends, and I want to see a picture of you getting a Jack Russell to wear one and not go ballistic, :D

Re: Dog poop...

We were once on vacation and had a neighbor kid watching our dogs. He thought were coming home a day sooner than we actually did and our dogs were in the house for about 36 hours and never went in the house. Must have been about ready to burst. They did have water but not food.

having a fiberglass floor- it should be easy to clean up- also try the piddle pads.
I have waded ashore carrying dogs so they could do thier thing on many occasions .

Re: Dog poop...

I'm anxiously waiting for a good answer to this one. My wife wants to take our dogs on over nighters next year. Although, I have a feeling that the good solution that works for a Jack Russel may not work for a 90 pound boxer, 110 pound German Shepherd and a 100 pound black lab...

I'm thinking we'll just take one at a time, But I'd still love to find a solution for anyone of them. Piddle pads will not work. Unless they make them the size of table clothes.

Best I can come up with don't install the carpet and use a transom shower to clean it up. Only problem with that is, then they might think it's okay to go when you're just out for the day.

Try a cat litter box, might work. Your dog might pick up the hint if its the only option available.

My parents have cats. My dogs think litter boxes are just wide shallow food bowls.... ;-)

My Boxers will start pacing when they have to go.
The boy will pee in the splash well, then i rinse it out.
The girl will not go in the boat. She gets the doggie life jacket, over she goes and poops in the water....funniest thing i ever seen...lol!
She poops and swims fast back to the swim platform...;)

Re: Dog poop...

nitsuj GROSS!!! but my Rat Terrier is just the same.

guys you have to know Lucy, she is exceptional for a Jack Russell.

Rick i saw something of TV last night, but it was expensive for what it was. https://www.officialtvwebsite.com/p...800-470-2914&gclid=CJ7174W6qp0CFQOdnAodoynRiw

Thanks, Bob for the kind words. Actually I feel honored as well to have met and hung out with Tasha! Bet the new doggie and Lucy will get along fine together..

OK, we have decided to just clean up after her. After all, this isn't nuclear waste.....

And Gary, I would love to see your poop at sea doggie!

Re: Dog poop...

The vet told us that the dog will relieve himself when the time comes. We took him off the boat twice a day and all was well, but there were a couple of times when he was on board for two days without a walk on land. He found a spot as far away as he could from his "den" and did his business. The far port corner of the aft deck is now his. ;)

The vet also prepared a bundle of eye drops, ear cleaning solution, heart worm and other meds, first-aid stuff, and paperwork (including rabies and other vaccination histories) so we could take our fur child from state to state, and into Canada.
