Hey SKIBUM1M,
The boat is looking great. I can't wait to see the whole thing done. I'm sure not as much as you are but I'll bet it's close.
Now for the top, we really need some of the details, details, details. :D
Looks great.

Mick the top will be yellow also.
Bob, I want it done soon, I am sick of working on cars in the driveway in 14 degree weather. Where was everyone needing work last week when it was 40?

For the last 2 nights I have sanded the cap, filled a few spots, and masked off the new carpet. Now if I can get the garage warmed up to 60 I will spray the top tomorrow night. I am trying to figure out how I am going to get out of the boat after spraying the inside without touching any of the sides. I already plan to run my extension cord over my garage door rail and opener rail so it drops down in the center of the boat and doesnt drag on the top of the boat. For getting out my best idea so far is to put a board on the swim platform and step on that, then take it off and spray the platform. I just have to make sure my paint suit doesnt sag into the fresh gelcoat. I will also have to tie a rope around the rafter for a handhold to get out.

SKIBUM1M,
Why don't you just put a ladder outside the boat and a short on in the boat and run a board between.
I will be looking forward to seeing that cap painted.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Skibum,

I am new to iboats (today) but have been following your progress on this project for the past week. I think your doing a great job and the pictures are speaking for themselves.

I have a 1975 Chrysler Cadet runabout ($0) that I am essentially going to be doing the same thing on. the hull looks like it's in good shape. The water that got trapped below the deck has not leaked out! There are some hairline cracks throughout that became evident when I washed the hull.

The demolition began on Saturday and so far the cap is off, 2/3 of the transom ripped out, and most of the glass ripped off the deck. The decking and below are completely saturated and full of water.

I will be creating my own thread on the progress and will be using some of the ideas found in this thread. I must say that I needed the courage to do this since I have never done it before. Your post helped a lot!

Thanks!
Ken

Re: transom and floor replacement

Ken welcome and thanks alot. It is great to hear I have inspired you. Make sure you take before pics which I did not.
Bob, If I go your route I think the ladders would get in the way of spraying the inside, and since murphy likes me alot he would certainly drop the board into fresh gelcoat.
Mick, I got the window fixed redneck style for tonight, I nailed a piece of plywood over it and duct taped the edges. It is 29 out now so hopefully I can get it up to 60. Just mask off the bottom, wipe it down with acetone, and spray. Wow put like that it sounds easy, too bad it is not that easy.

SKIBUM1M,
OK, I forgot about Murphy. He really does get around.
I have a new idea. Just rig up a bo'sun's chair to swing in and out like they do in the Navy. Hey it took me awhile to find out how to spell it too. :D
We may also have to rename you "BIG BIRD" :D
Just Kidding, I think it is going to look awesome.
Keep it rolling.

I am glad I went with 5 gallons of gelcoat because I am getting pretty low. I still have the knock down seat in front of the motor well to spray but I will wait till I am done sanding in case I break thru I will spray it all at once. It went on pretty smooth compared to the hull so most of it will be hand sanding instead of the da. There are also alot of areas I dont know if I will sand and polish like under the seats and behind the trim panels. I think some of the small areas like around the steering wheel may not need sanding and I dont know how I would buff the shine back because the buffing pad would never get in there. Tomorrow night I will wash the pva off and start sanding. I cant wait to get it all buffed like the hull so I can start putting parts back on it.

Looks great. I wasn't sure, not that it matters, about the whole boat being yellow but it is going to look great. But did you find out why the gelcoat is spraying like that? And also I was wondering why you didn't spray the cap while it was off the boat. Just curious. I may have missed something in your thread.

Looks great skibum! Good luck with the sanding, looks like you have your work cut out for you! It'll look great when you get it buffed out!

Tallcanadian, I sprayed with the cap on because I didnt want to stress the new gelcoat and end up with spyder cracks in it. It is spraying rough because I am using a wagner power sprayer to get it on thick enough.

SKIBUM1M,
It looks pretty good for a Wagner power painter. It will really stand out in any crowd.
Very cool

Re: transom and floor replacement

Guess what I have been doing. I think I sprayed it a bit thin because I have broken thru in 3 spots so far. I hope I dont run out of gelcoat. I will keep sanding till it is all smooth then I will spray the flip down seat and all the spots hoping it matches. Worst case I will have to order a gallon or 2 more of gelcoat and respray the outer edges of the cap. Tonight I stopped early because my arms were sore from hand sanding. This is a lot of work

SKIBUM1M,
Once you get all that sanding done you will have arms like Popeye. :p
Sorry to hear you may have to order more material. I know you don't want to leave it to thin.
