hey all,
I saw snow in the air but it didn't stick. Mostly rain and wind here.
Temp went down considerably too. :(
Sorry friscoboater about the honey due list. I started to ask my BH if she really thought I needed her help to find stuff to keep me busy but then I woke up and decided that wasn't a very good plan. I just took care of the list and went back to work. :(
Good luck man.

I got the list doen and I have been working on the electrics ever since. I have them pretty much sorted out, and I just need to go tomorrow and get a distro panel.

I will update with pics and video tomorrow.

Waiting to see what you come up with.

I've been looking at a Blue Sea 16 blade fuse block for mine. (unless you can show us something more interesting) I plan on re-designing the dashboard. I've added a concept drawing of the new one to photobucket, as well as instrument "before" pics.

Have you found a source for "original" color wires? Like the striped colors? I don't even know if it really matters on a full rebuild.

I have the original wire colors, but they do not match my boat. Glastron used whatever to make my boat. I am headed to est marine to get a panel.

Well, another weekend gone. I was very productive this weekend. I have the electrics about 95% done and they are working great. The only problem in the fuel gauge. It worked ok last summer, but was erratic. I think sending unit is bad. I installed some blue led lights under the rails, and installed a new panel. 600 zipties later it looks great.

There is 20 minutes of video with some how too and tech info for electrical.

friscoboater,
Those LED's look pretty sweet. :D
That spaghetti you started with looks familiar to me too.
I haven't watched the video yet but I will when I have more time.
Moving along great, keep it rolling.

Thorough as usual:)

I just went all way back to the start on your thread. You are a long way along from the very beginning aren't you.

So close now... Your son will be driving that boat years from now.

Friscoboater,

My wiring had the nav lights and anchor lite on opposite sides of the same dpdt switch, crosswired so that in the nav direction all came on. Ib the anchor position the all around light came on by itself. I'll be breaking mine out seperate like yours.

The gas gauge:
Without the mystery component, my gauge gets a positive, ground, lamp, and sense connection. If you tie a variable resistor of around 300 - 500 ohms between the ground and sense terminals, you should be able to sweep the full range of the gauge. I tested mine that way. The gauge actually works between 0 and 160 (or 90) ohms (have to look it up but it's not critical for testing) but anything over that will work. If the resistor is too big, you won't be able to see the sweep well since the range is all at one end. The Added box may be your problem also. If it ties into the equation, it could be not working right and dragging the meter down.

In summary the simple path is posotive wire - gauge positive terminal - gauge internal workings - gauge sense terminal - sending unit posotive - sending unit internal resistor - sending unit ground - gauge ground terminal. All this is simply a variable resistance between the sense terminal and gauge ground.

It is entirely possible that the extra ground wire at the sending terminal went to a common somewhere, or someone was lazy enough to tap a ground there for use elsewhere.

Sorry I tried to dumb it sown so much, but a schematic would be easier. Gotta run now, but I'll try to post a drawing this evening if you wish.

Friscoboater,

I was thinking about the mystery box. I bet it hooked to the positive, ground, and sense on the meter and to the fuel light. It probably uses the + and - to operate, and watches the resistance at the sense line from the tank. Then at a specified resistance (say below 1/8th of the way up from empty reading), it turns on the light.

Very nice job on the wiring and those LEDs are way cool. I kinda half-assed the wiring on my last boat, you've inspired me to be more thorough and neat on my current project.

Ok, one correction as I head out the door.

The internet lists most Teleflex fuel systems to be a 33 - 240 ohm sweep. that would mean your test resistor needs to be capable of doing the same. after you test the gauge, try hooking up the box and test again to see if the light comes on.

Thanks for th info mountain man. A drawing would be really helpful. I and very visual and it would really help. I am going to try and hit a west marine today and pick up a new sender unit to test out the system.

Should I have voltage at the tank? I am showing 9.85 volts.

Nice video Frisco! Seeing all those wires makes me cringe....almost all of the wiring was gone from my boat when I got it. So I'll be starting over from scratch!

Archbuilder, It is really not as bad as it looks.

Great news I picked up a new sending unit today and it WORKED!!!! Now I just need to calibrate it.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement throughout the thread. As long as you like the videos and pictures I will keep you updated.

Re: 81 Glastron SX-190 Transom and Engine- PICS Galore Update 11-8

Glad to see the new sender worked. I guess it doesn't matter about the voltage at the tank any more. Just for future reference an open circuit such as across a switch that's off, or across a disconnected sender unit, will read near the supply voltage. In this case the battery.

Did the mysterious box hook up like I suspected?

BTW I scored today! following your lead, I went looking for those Pod Lights. The guy took me over to the discontinued shelf. They had a $89 set of led under running-board strips designed with amber and white LEDs for trucks. each stick is 5 feet long. He gave me the kit for 15 bucks!

Here's the gauge schematic I came up with Kinda hard to see at 640x480

Re: 81 Glastron SX-190 Transom and Engine- PICS Galore Update 11-8

Thanks Mitch for the schematic. I am really happy that the sender was the problem and not something else.

As for as the mystery box... It still does nothing, or the "low fuel" bulb is burned out. I really do not care, as long as everything else works and the needle on the gauge works. I really wanted to get more done today, but I had a late client meeting and had to stay clean for that.

Hasta pasta!
