Hello, I have been reading this forum for seven years. Usually I can find the answers to all of my questions by reading the past forums and the archives.
Not this time. I have a 1987, 19.5' bayliner Capri with a 5.0L and a Cobra outdrive. My problem started with hard shifting and then making a knocking noise from the Gimbel housing at idle speed in forward gear. I have the OMC manual for my outdrive. I have followed all of the steps for removal of the outdrive. Remove six bolts, support, pull straight back. It moved back about an 1/8" and stopped. I thought maybe the lower shift cable was holding it so I removed it from the right side of the carburetor. No luck, next I soaked everything I could see through the 1/8" hole with Karo-oil. After waiting till the next day it still will not move. I tried prying on it evenly, and it will not move.
So before I break anything I have decided to ask for help.
Is there anything that is not listed in the OMC manual connected?
What else could I try to remove this outdrive?
Any help would be great!!!!

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

Ok, Sorry I just found the post about being rusted to the gimbal bearing.
If this is the case do you just pry harder?
I do not have a shift linkage cover or a king cobra.
Thanks

Just the trim rams and the six nuts nothing hidden and you don't need to even touch the shift cable, the driveshaft splines maybe rusted some and your going to have work it in and out.

Ayuh,...Hook the rams back up,+ try the hydraulics to Push it off....
With a block of wood at the base, pick it up,+ Slam it down against the wood...

Make sure you clean all the gunk that is built up in the splines and use spline grease before you put it back on, or it will be a job to slide it back into place.

Thanks for the quick replies, and for the advice. Also to ad to it the boat is in neutral, the prop spins freely both ways. And the motor runs great. I just can't shift. I am going to try again now, Thanks all!

Should be in neutral. Sounds like you have a build-up problem on the shaft. Keep prying.

Thanks all, I tried the hydraulic rams it budged twice I thought it was loose so I removed the rod. I tried picking it up and dropping it several times, until I got tired of it. Now I have a gap of 1/2". I soaked it with oil once again and I am going to try again tomorrow after work.
Thanks again

What are you soaking with oil? There are two places where it can be stuck..the splines going into the coupler on the back of the engine and the drive shaft where it goes through the gimbal bearing.

Picking it up and dropping it isn't helping much other than flexing the u-joint, now that you've seperated it more using the trim rams, push it back together then work it back out again, each time you'll probably get a little farther as it loosens up, I don't think there's a way to get any lube on the engine side of the bearing where the spline is.

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

I figured the oil was not reaching the splines or the bearing. Wishful thinking I guess, I thought maybe it was hung on the exhaust or water passages. As for pushing it back in it will not move either way, But I will try to get to go in. I have been a bad boat owner, I have had the boat for seven years and this is the first time I know of that the unit has been removed.
I should have done better preventive maintenance, now I know.
Thanks All

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

I have a question I was winterizing my cobra out drive.
When I un screwed the water drain plug on the left side it came out and water driped out but when I went to put the screw back in it was like the nut or threds on the in side were gone.
What hold the screw on the in side? Did I unscrew the wrong thing?
Any help would be great any diagram or picture would also be great.

Ayuh,... You Sure Did,... That's the screw that's Gotta be there, that does little or nothing...
You'll have to drop the lower unit to retrieve the "Nut",+ reinstall the screw....

The first picture that shows a pivot housing water drain on the starboard side of the stern drive is wrong. That is a bushing for the shift bell crank.

What about picture 2 Is that a water drain thats needs to be drained? Thats the first I seen that one. I thought all you had to do was store the drive in the down position.

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal

Been awhile since I have owned my Cobra. There is possibly a pocket there that could store some water. On the other hand, there is a pocket where the bellcrank is too and there is no way to drain that one.
