Re: Fitness Challenge???

EITHER changing diet OR increasing physical activity can result in weight loss.

...

diet change is the one and only key to weight loss.

You are both right and you are both wrong.

Ask any anorexic person how healthy they feel. Weight loss should not be a goal, fitness should. Stop eating and you are guaranteed to lose ALL of your weight. Start exercising and you are guaranteed to lose all of your BAD weight, no matter what you eat. Want to eat a side of Crisco every meal? You can be healthy, so long as you work it off.

Dieting people fail because they confuse 'diet' with 'starve' or they eat foods they don't enjoy because some diet show or website told them to.

Since this thread is obviously NOT about reducing to the point of anorexia, your point is meaningless. However, for many of us, weight lost most definitely should be a goal. Are you suggesting that a 400 LB person shouldn't worry about their weight and should instead just focus on some vague concept of "fitness"? I used to know a woman who thought she didn't need to worry about her weight because she thought she was "fit". I politely listened to her and didn't argue because it was obvious she wouldn't have listened.

Actually, what you wrote is not correct in several ways. Exercise does not guarantee weight loss. Neither does a diet change. And while it is theoretically possible to eat whatever one wants and then work it off, many people are not at a fitness level that allows them to burn off excessive high calorie food.

Dieting people fail because they confuse 'diet' with 'starve' or they eat foods they don't enjoy because some diet show or website told them to.
Yup, that and also because they think that because they've changed their diet that they can continue to sit on their butts watching TV or reading online fora instead of getting out and doing something! ;)

Piper_chuck, it seems your end goal is to simply argue, not educate, but I'll give it one last go.

An anorexic person IS a fat person without the fat. Neither have muscle. Neither are fit. So, even if the fat person lost nearly all fat, they would still not be healthy, just someone who has nearly no fat and no muscle. The point is precisely valid.

Are you suggesting that a 400 LB person shouldn't worry about their weight and should instead just focus on some vague concept of "fitness"?

I'm saying exactly that. You burn carbs while working out, but do the majority of fat burning while at rest, via muscle production and sustaining. Without 'fitness', you are doing neither. A person who does not exercise to gain muscle will only burn the food they ate and very little of the fat they wear.

You missed the big capital letters.. 'BAD weight'. If you have little fat and plenty of muscle and you work out, will you gain weight? Sure. But now who is off topic of the thread? It's pretty plain, you exercise and you gain muscle; You gain muscle and your metabolism goes up; Your metabolism goes up and you burn more fat, even when not exercising. You simply eat less and the reverse happens.

Re: Fitness Challenge???

i do have a mp3 player but the music i have is getting old. i cant listen to anything slow or i cant get going. i go to la fitness and there really isn't to many things worth looking at, mostly overweight or not beautiful people. i seem to fit in though as i am overweight but i am gorgeous. we even have tv's in the gym but i HATE cardio but i do it cause i want to be able to shop at regular stores. im tired of shopping in the fat and ugly section of the mall. on Monday i will have been working out for 2 months, ive only lost about 9 lbs. that number is disappointing but its a number i feel better and clothes i haven't worn in a year are starting to fit.

i see there is a feud about how and what to do to loose weight. here is the deal, exercise more try to eat less and you will loose weight. you dont even have to change the way you eat, just change your physical activities and you will loose weight, slowly but it will come off. i have lowered my consumption of alcohol and stopped any fast food, other than that everything is normal eating. i dont eat bad to start with just eat to much. i am very sure i could drop more weight by dieting but i like food.

Haha. I always feel thankful the local 'Curves' centers have blacked out windows.

No, my goal is to make sure accurate information is posted rather than many of the myths that people have. If you prefer to go the ad hominem route rather than discuss, so be it.

An anorexic person IS a fat person without the fat. Neither have muscle. Neither are fit. So, even if the fat person lost nearly all fat, they would still not be healthy, just someone who has nearly no fat and no muscle. The point is precisely valid.
"A fat person without the fat"? What kind of doublespeak is that? Anorexia is not relevant in a discussion about losing weight other than to serve as a caution to not overdo the fat loss.

I'm saying exactly that. You burn carbs while working out, but do the majority of fat burning while at rest, via muscle production and sustaining. Without 'fitness', you are doing neither. A person who does not exercise to gain muscle will only burn the food they ate and very little of the fat they wear.
I agree with the above, to a point. The goal of exercise does not have to be to gain muscle, at least not in the bulking up sense. It can be to tone the existing muscles and to burn off excess fat.

Interesting story. What were you trying to tell her?
I wasn't trying to tell her anything. We were just chatting and she shared with me her opinion that she was "fit". When she did this I made a conscious decision to let her be happy in her opinion, because she was at least doing some exercise, rather than confront her about her excess weight.

You missed the big capital letters.. 'BAD weight'. If you have little fat and plenty of muscle and you work out, will you gain weight? Sure. But now who is off topic of the thread?
Once again, you're leaving out part of the equation. A person with little fat who works out might gain or they might lose. It all depends on how many calories they're taking in. However, since I suspect most who are interested in this thread are in the category of wanting to get rid of excess fat, your example is rather off topic.

It's pretty plain, you exercise and you gain muscle; You gain muscle and your metabolism goes up; Your metabolism goes up and you burn more fat, even when not exercising. You simply eat less and the reverse happens.
Now who's arguing for the sake of argument? What I was pointing out is simply that increasing exercise does not guarantee fat or weight loss. Neither does diet change. If you start exercising, but eat like a pig to compensate, you might actually gain fat. Conversely, if you make a diet change, but reduce activity because you feel like you have no energy, you also might not lose fat. Diet and exercise go together.

I've got some really fast bagpipe music (that's where the "piper" comes from) I could share with you. That'd get the feet moving! ;) I agree fast music works best, although I do have a few slow tunes that keep me moving through long sessions.

i go to la fitness and there really isn't to many things worth looking at, mostly overweight or not beautiful people. i seem to fit in though as i am overweight but i am gorgeous. we even have tv's in the gym but i HATE cardio but i do it cause i want to be able to shop at regular stores.
Not sure where you live, but can you do any of your aerobic work outside? I've always found that to be more interesting than indoors. The reasons mine is indoors right now are because it's become a little cold here, because it's a bit easier to control my pace while I'm getting back into it, and because the YMCA is a 1 minute drive and I can work out while my oldest daughter is in swim practice, my wife is doing laps and while our youngest daughter is at their child care.

im tired of shopping in the fat and ugly section of the mall. on Monday i will have been working out for 2 months, ive only lost about 9 lbs. that number is disappointing but its a number i feel better and clothes i haven't worn in a year are starting to fit.
9 lbs in two months isn't bad, good job! For some, slow and steady results in better long term results than fast plans that they abandon. Since you're exercising and watching what you eat, you might have actually lost more than 9 lbs of fat. You've already noticed a reduction in clothing size and you feel better, it sounds like you're making great progress. Keep it up!

Agreed. I think the point of the argument is to give information to people who are trying to figure out what might work for them.

Technically, you are correct, but not paying careful attention to what one eat's, and reducing intake, is a certain plan for fitness failure.

For instance, one meal at Pizza Hut, can rack up 80 grams of saturated fat. It will take over 7 miles of running, to burn off that one meal.

Even champions like Lance Armstrong, monitor closly what, how much and when they eat.

Re: Fitness Challenge???

Well, since we now have a self-appointed mythbuster , this will be my last post on the subject.

Everyone be sure to consult your doctor(s) before starting a diet & exercise regimen. If possible, get a referral to a registered dietitian/nutritionist. The one I worked with had a PhD and 15 years experience. My results speak for themselves.

As for Mr.-Know-It-All, I'm putting him on my ignore list as I have no wish to waste my time with his over-inflated ego.

Well, isn't that special? It's a pity you can't have a civil discussion with someone who has different opinions without resorting to attacks. If you're unable to control yourself, go ahead and put me on ignore. That way people won't have to waste any more time reading your insults.
