Re: Fitness Challenge???

diet is important, but alcohol consumption is a absolute no no even an hour of running will burn 800 calories. 3, 4, 5, beers negates all your work. i havent changed my diet drastically, the only thing i have done is no fast food at all. i know i have gained muscle, and i have dropped more fat then 8 pounds down 2 pant sizes and one shirt size. if you change nothing except for exercising you will lose weight very slowly but it will come off.

Diet means everything you consume, including alcohol. A calorie is a calorie. Alcohol contains calories just like food and other beverages do. Consume more calories per day than you burn and you'll gain weight. It's just that simple.

Re: Fitness Challenge???

DIET is the key to weight loss. You can run/jump/swim a hundred miles a day, but if you're still taking in too many calories, you'll gain weight.
Diet is only one of many of the keys. It's been shown over and over that diet change alone might result in a temporary weight loss, but that most who try this approach get tired of dieting and fall back into old (bad) eating habits.

If a person is at a steady, but excessive, weight and has been leading a sedentary lifestyle then exercise most definitely will result in not only weight loss, but also better health, assuming they maintain the same diet. If they also modify their diet to consume less calories, the weight loss will be faster.

i was just stating that some people dont think about things they drink as consumption. most of the time if they dont chew they dont think they are "eating". look all i want is to get healthier and ive finally got on a road to doing so. its a long, hard, boring road but i real interested to see my wang with out a mirror or moving my gut.

Alcohol, candy, fatty foods, the list goes on. I used to have a friend who equated all these frills to minutes on the treadmill, stair machine, aerobics class, etc. It was interesting to think about how much time it would take to burn off something as little as a Hershey Kiss. Thinking this way also made it much easier to avoid such things...

I said diet, not dieting. Big difference. Refer back to my post #18 on page one.

You wrote "DIET is the key to weight loss." and I pointed out that it is not THE key to weight loss and that many people who try to lose weight by change of diet (or dieting) fall back into their old habits after some amount of success. Study after study has shown that diet is part, but far from the only thing necessary to lose weight and keep it off.

P.S. Your posts contradict each other. In one you say eat right and exercise. In the other you say diet is THE key.

Maybe we should be burning this extra energy at the gym. :)

Technically, a "diet" also means food that one consumes daily, irregardless of the nutritional value. A healthy diet can simply means that one consumes healthy food regularly.

My posts actually do NOT contradict one another. What I said FIRST in post #18 was to eat right. Exercise is also helpful, but not mandatory for weight loss.

In Nov 2007, having grown weary of being constantly mistaken for Santa Clause, I attended a nutrition and weight loss clinic by the V.A. and learned a great deal about how to eat a healthy diet. I was also their "poster boy" by the end of the 12-week class, having lost 36 pounds by then.

Started the class at age 54 weighing 320 pounds. I lost a total of 121 pounds, getting down to 199 by mid-summer of this year at 56 years of age. (I was also able to get back into my old USAF uniform!)

The first 90 pounds that I lost was via DIET only and I did that in the first year, i.e. by Nov 2008. At that point, I STARTED a mild exercise regimen, using a ski machine at home. My weight loss continued. After a month or so on the ski machine, I also added weightlifting with free weights... again, at home.

Didn't have to become a gym rat or even exercise in order to lose the weight.

FYI - about cardio, per the dietitians (given steady state caloric intake):

20 mins/day = improvement and stability to health

30 - 45 mins/day = weight maintenance

45 - 60 mins/day = weight LOSS

Me at 320 pounds:

Re: Fitness Challenge???

by 45-60 minutes of cardio would that be on the treadmill running for an hour? i do 30 minutes on the elliptical then go and lift weights for about an hour to get through the routine. that puts me at about an hour an a half of exercise. i dont go super heavy with the weights but i can tell at the end that im spent. i know that cardio is keeping your heart pumping but i sweat for the entire time im in the gym so i guess my heart is pumping. i couldnt even think of doing an hour of treadmill it is so boring i have to drag myself to the gym because of that.

Cardio means whatever aerobic exercise you do, whether it's running on the treadmill or something else that elevates your heart rate. I don't like treadmills either, so use the ski machine. That at least gets my arms moving as well. I just plop the machine in front of the tv and ski while watching a show that maintains my interest level. (All recorded, natch.)

The greatest exercise one can do is to push oneself away from the dinner table! :D

First let me say congrats!

Second, your posts did indeed contradict each other.

Third, EITHER changing diet OR increasing physical activity can result in weight loss. In fact, it is very possible to increase the calories one intakes and still lose weight if one increases their activity level so it burns more calories than being consumed. For example, when I was training heavily in the 90s I consumed way more than I do now and continued to lose weight and inches. On a single bike ride I would burn 3000 calories! I had a great time riding and as a side benefit I could eat whatever and as much as I wanted!

In your post that started this disagreement you attempted to make it sound like diet change is the one and only key to weight loss. My point was, and still is, that might be true for some people, but that most who try by diet change alone quite simply fail.

I did an hour on the treadmill once, and only once. A friend and I challenged each other to see how far we could go in an hour. I did 8 miles, about 1/2 mile more than he managed. The manager of the gym saw us at about 45 minutes and asked us what we were up to (she knew we were always pulling some kind of stunt). When she heard, she offered tshirts and mugs to both of us if we completed the hour. If it weren't for the fun of the challenge, and the scenery of the aerobics class that was in front of the treadmills:D, I think we both would have died of boredom. An hour takes focus.

i do 30 minutes on the elliptical then go and lift weights for about an hour to get through the routine. that puts me at about an hour an a half of exercise. i dont go super heavy with the weights but i can tell at the end that im spent.
I typically arrange my workout the opposite way. Strength first, cardio second. Either way, 1.5 hours total is great!

i know that cardio is keeping your heart pumping but i sweat for the entire time im in the gym so i guess my heart is pumping. i couldnt even think of doing an hour of treadmill it is so boring i have to drag myself to the gym because of that.
If a single machine is getting to you, mix in some other aerobic machines. Also, if you don't have something to distract you, consider getting an MP3 player or something else to help engage your mind.

Re: Fitness Challenge???

OK guys I am 46 and still within 5 lbs of my high school gradaution wieght , One thing that could really help and be fun is to play a full day of paintball .. Yes you will have to run around , hunt and shoot other humans ,and perhaps if you have the energy to get on the Speed Ball field you will get a 2 minute workout that blows your mind !! You will be sweating , winded , but having fun , The workout will last for at least a few hours if not the day .. Great way to stay in shape not to mention if you have kids great way to share the day with them !!!
