Time to jump in and test the waters with my own resto thread. This will be a slow on-going project as it is my first stab at restoration. I've enjoyed reading everybody else's projects and maybe somebody can learn from my mistakes. Bought this as a project, brought it home and started stripping it. It's in rough shape, but the bones seem to be there. I'm sure many surprises await me. Here's what I'm starting with:

First order of biz was to get a new / used workable trailer w / bunks!

Then peeled off all stickers, stripes and gunk, a quick wash, rub out and wax to see what I have to work with:

Re: 1989 Starcraft Bluewater 221 Offshore - Restoration Thread

Have started a little heavier restoration now (before I found this site) and don't have many pics of the work. But... will from here on out. I have since stripped the enitre cockpit of all seats & podiums, all teak trim, doors, etc. has been removed, and the backing plates across interior transom have been removed. Wood too rotted even for templates so I'll have to make from scratch. Initial thoughts to replace with starboard rather than wood. Floor middle section was soft so took that out, ground out the old glass and put in all new with reinforcements. Think the engine needs to come out and be refreshed, check stringers, and deal with hull nicks and chips.

Open to comments and opinions. Just bear with me as I feel restoration will slow a little during the fishing season. Thanks, and glad I found this place!!!

Man I love that boat! Fiberglass and all!
Reminds me of my buddy's Farralon back home in Cali..

She looks really decent in those pics (those really big, need to be resized to 640 x 480, by the way)

I'll look fwd to watching your progress!

Pullnlines,

Yeh, I caught that on the web and called that guy. He said he was too lazy to take his own pics so he swiped mine off here and put'em up. "There's no crime against that" he said. Whatever! He eventually put his pics up, but mine are still out there too on his posts. Congrats on your 93. Would love to see some pics as a reference when you get a chance as mine is gutted. Been collecting a few others guys pics as I come across them. Planning as a pocket rocket salmon boat. 4 riggers, rocket launchers on the HT, planer board tubes down the HT sides, dipsy tubes on the gunnels, etc. Got to get the bones back in shape first, then the lipstick and heels! Just noticed you're in MI too. Only 'bout 1/2 hr. away. Cool!

wow can't believe some people try to sell boat with pics of another boat a little misrepresentation that guy is posted all over the place I contacted him to, just sounded fishy!!! I'm going to try and post a link of my boat the guy I bought it from did a very nice job with current pics. the boat is in great shape just needs a good rub out(currently in the process, think my arms will fall off). Plans are to put it up insaginaw bay with an occasional run to the west side(manistee) for salmon. hopefully this link works

Awesome pics and very clean! When you said it was a 93 kinda thought it might be that boat from OH. Saw it up for $9,800 a while ago. Can I ask what you got her for? It's sharp and fish ready! You'll love it in Manistee! I keep my other boat over in Ludington for Salmon, and picked the Starcraft for Saginaw Bay.

i really like the lines of that boat and the hardtop makes it even more appealing to me, i havent seen many of them in this area, im not sure but i think "her highness" gave me the approval to aquire another boat for pleasure and cruising, not entirely sure of that gonna ask for clarification,
of course i have to finish the one i have in refit now, a small boat im building to fish the lakes, river and intercoastal around here, dont want to have to get rid of it to get another.
good luck with your project, i'll be lookin in from time to time to see how your fairing, D

Pullnlines,

Yes technically there is a crime here but almost impossible to enforce. :(

If you took the pictures you own the copyright to them, they are your property; ? "springs" to life when you take the picture. I'm not a lawyer but taught artists about the ? law at Ole Miss.

yep picked it up in ohio, lets just say the price was firm with just a little negotiaton room, but equipment and condition was worth it. There is an 88 in capac that I put an offer on but he wasn't willing to budge or start the motor???? As for mine it's wheelin out very nice, the 5.7 purrs like a kitten and I can't wait to get it in the water.:D

Yep, thought so. She's a beauty for sure. Went back and drooled over your pics again. Very nice!!! I'll bet that 5.7 scoots too! I looked at that 88 in Capac last year. He was asking considerably more then. Talked to him again this year and he's still a little high. Plus the OMC is less desirable. He hasn't run that motor in 4 years. You definately got the better boat! When you get all the gear on it, post the picks so we can see her rigged! Was working on mine a little tonight, but its so cold, you can see your breath out there. Back at it Saturday, should be a little warmer! Congrats again!

A little more cleaned up:

3-27-10JeffsBoat011.jpg

Took all teak out. Gotta love the frost on the windshield!

3-27-10JeffsBoat013.jpg

Was hoping to use transom pieces as templates, however... the "mulch" was just being held together by the stapled vinyl.

Suppose to rain Sunday, so may do some teak sanding in the garage!

You're enjoying the pics cause it makes you realize how sweet YOUR boat looks! Ha!:) Thanks for the offer to check yours as templates. May take you up on that. So the more you rub, the more you like yours?

Hard top side supports had teak on them. Lousy pic, but you can see it at least.

4-20-09SeansBoat007.jpg

The PO painted ALL the teak (while still on the boat) with a picnic table type redwood stain! More stain on fiberglass than on the teak! So... a million screws later it's all off and being sanded and restained as it should have been. Taking the slat louvers out of cabin doors and replacing with dark plastic to match the dash & glovebox. Helps to keep the critters out! Broken engine box rod holder to be fixed, missing starboard back piece rod rack holder, have to make another, etc.

That Capac boat had teak supports too, he just covered it with same carpet that's under the hardtop, cause they were so beat up, he couldn't repair. Plus, he coud hang his fishing lures on that carpet.

Looks like your teak was in good shape and all there at least!

Re: 1989 Starcraft Bluewater 221 Offshore - Restoration

dropped it in the water today all I can say is wow.... ran perfect the 5.7 jumps out of the water even with 3 fat guys onboard. Gave it a good shakeout run and everything ran smooth including the auto pilot. Topped out abot 38 and cruised about 33 @ 3/4 throttle with a 15 pitch prop(may change to a 17p, have an extra, just to see) ran and handled very well. Next items, need to find a rocket launcher, install the planer mast and rod holders, and decide how many and where the downriggers will go. Had the camera along so got a few pictures.
