2010 Tahoe towing...

I was at the dealership looking at Tahoe's for a tow vehicle. They are rated at 7100 pounds. But sales guy was telling me with the heavy duty tow package (additional coolers) it can tow an additional 3000 pounds.

So is this true that a Tahoe with tow package can tow 10k plus pounds?

Thanks for the help and information.

I wouldn't tow more than 7000 lbs with a Tahoe even if it was rated for more. I tow that same load with a 1/2T Silverado and I sure wouldn't want to tow anything heavier.

Re: 2010 Tahoe towing...

There is always an IF when someone asks a question like "how much can it tow". With a weight distributing hitch it can tow up to the hitch platform rating. Back in the good old days I towed a 26 foot travel trailer with a 305 GMC van that was rated at a whopping 145 HP. I was never in anyones way and had zero problems. 10,000# -- NO! 6500 -- yes. With a much better and more powerful vehicle, the Tahoe will tow fine -- properly equipped. However the most overlooked part of that equation is axle ratio. It takes a bunch of HP to overcome a poor axle ratio selection.

I wouldn't drag 10k around with a 4L60E transmission, cooler or not and expect any kind of longevity on your Tahoe drive-train.

My current tow vehicle: 4x4 99 Tahoe with autotrac. The 4L60 let go and had it built back right, with stout shift kit (you can sure feel it but no slippage.) and have had no trouble since. Additionally I tow in 3rd. I don't have nice little idiot Button for towing for those like me that didn't know "don't tow in drive"

If the current models have the 6L80E no sweat just make sure you still don't tow in "D" as in drive, unless it has a tow button that disables the Over drive most newer models do. I Didn't know I was supposed to tow in 3rd. Live fast learn hard.

Otherwise my Tahoe pulls my rig great.

Woops Sorry! New Tranny in Tahoes! 6 speed electronic job. In that case follow all the safety ratings straight from Chevy and don't add extras to tow more, your 35 to 40k SUV might last longer.

Can't talk about the newest 6 speed transmissions but the "Tow Button" changes the shift points. It does nothing for locking out overdrive.

Is 7100lbs the best the government can do?...lol. Go check out a new Sequoia... they can pull 10,000 lbs (2WD, 5.7L) or 9600 lbs if you want an AWD version.

Re: 2010 Tahoe towing...

I've got a 2007 Tahoe and I've got a larger rear axle (Cant remember what it is but it was an option, cost me a few hundred bucks) and it added an additional 1000 lbs towing capacity.

Having said that, my setup is about 6500 lbs when we're fully loaded with gear and fuel and it tows well.

The Tahoe has been a really good tow vehicle, a really good vehicle overall actually. It definitely changed my view on American cars!

Of course the dually diesel is the preferred vehicle for all loads. :)

The 6L90 in a new Tahoe lets you select gears manually. How about a 3/4 ton Suburban?

Re: 2010 Tahoe towing...

Out of the factory, they are all rated for 5,000 lbs max. I ain't seen a Tahoe, F150, Titan, Armada, Silverado, Sequoia, Sierra, Tundra or any of them rated AT THE HITCH for more than 5k. The hitch is the little device at the back that is essential to the task at hand: towing more than 5k.

Hook up your 6,000 lb boat/trailer and you are over the rating of that hitch.

If someone finds any of these new vehicles rated at the hitch for more than 5k, please let me know.

I've seen the ads:

"9100 lbs when equipped with max towing"

"When properly equipped with heavy duty tow package"

I've checked the boxes on the order for for max towing, or heavy duty everything, 6.0 liter engine upgrades, etc.

Guess what: You get a hitch rated for 5k lbs. That's it. I am sure none of you are running around setting up weight distributing attachments, because that is what you need to properly tow over 5k with these trucks listed above.

I guess you could visit the local hitch guy and get a real Class IV hitch. Your call.

We pulled our 5500-pound rig all last summer with a 08' Tahoe and did not experience a single issue. It does have the MAX TOW package and pulled like a champion! Will upgrade to a 2010 F150 later this fall though...

Re: 2010 Tahoe towing...

I would hate to see another boater denied his claim.

Over on speedwake, a guy lost his rig and was denied his insurance claim. Why should the insurance company pay for his loss when he towed a 6700 lb boat/trailer on a hitch rated for 5000?

He's out about 14 grand. He keeps making the monthly payments, but their ain't no boat to go along with them! Now THAT stings.
