sure its a good idea.

install is simple.

your hot-temp buzzer is still necessary (in case your thinking the gauge is a substitute for it)

There is no easy connection for that unless you have installed a tell tale.

You could do both after following the guidelines in the tell-tale thread, just use the tee that comes with the gauge kit and insert it a few inches from the engine outlet. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222677

it doesn't have a tell-tale on it. things like this make me nervous. no problems with the motor so far but i'd feel more comfortable with a gauge. i hate that tapping is involved.

The water pressure gauge and tell-tale would just let you know that the waterpump is working and tells you nothing about the circulation of water through the cooling passages of the engine.

A better and easier choice might be a temperature gauge, which gives you a heads-up and early warning if the cooling varies from normal. You have a warning horn and temperature switch, but by the time that engages some damage is often already done. http://www.downloadingfiles.co.uk/teleflexfiles/gauges/Outboards.pdf

Which is exactly why a motor without a telltale should have a water pressure gauge. Although you get an indication of overheat with the temp gauge rising, you still don't know why. A quick glance at the WP gauge tells you if it is a water pump gone south or something else. It is as valuable as any other gauge but like any gauge, you must actually look at them periodically. The WP gauge has no sender. On your engine you merely tap into the water jacket, thead the hole and screw in a 1/8 inch hose barb. Instructions come with the gauge.

I think that the discussion has gone circular in that you obviously need to tap the water passage to have a water pressure gauge and/or a tell-tale.

thanks for the input guys........but, i think i've got another problem. all this talk about overheating got me wondering about my overheat buzzer. i've never heard mine (bought the boat last year) and reading through the motor manual it should have one (don't they normally sound when starting?).
i opened my control box and found this:

the gray wire is cut. don't know why......does anybody have a wire diagram for these control boxes?

Yup -- if you want one you to need to tap. No big deal. tap bit is cheap, tap is cheap, and hose barb is cheap. So the tell tale shows water is moving. It does not tell you how well water is moving. The gauge does. Log the reading at idle and WOT with a new impeller. any deviation down the line says "Give me a new impeller". Is peace of mind worth about 40 bucks and a little time? It is to me.

You may find that it is easier to change out the outer exhaust cover with a later used cover which has the telltale hole already factory machined. There have to be thousands of these covers laying around in salvage shops.

Installign a WPG sounds simple enough. Does anyone know if they come with a warning beep or signal.

Obviously the gauge is important, but a signal would be great too as we can easily "get distracted" while boating!

The grey wire is the signal wire for your tachometer; it is supposed to be taped off inside the control but accessible if you should add a tach later.

The self-test horns did not emerge until 1989. Ground the tan wire at the cylinder head with the ignition switch turned to the run position; the horn should sound.

Horn has purple wire that hooks to ACC terminal on switch and Tan wire that gos to sensors on cylinders. Take wire off sensor and ground to test horn. Mine don't sound when starting.

The round white thingy is the buzzer. To test it simply apply 12VDC to the terminals. Gray wire is for tachometer...
