Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

Running the blower WHILE fueling sucks the fumes into the bilge.
I don't follow this line of thought, can you elaborate? The blowers blow from bilge to outside, not the other way around.

your bilge isn't sealed, so when you draw air from it, you create a negative pressure that suck air in from around it. When fueling that air is full of gas fumes that also get draw in.

Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

Why did you ask if every boat had one then.

I wasn't asking YOU. I quoted "ThaJeffSki", that posted the statement in an another attempt to belittle the OP. But the statement doesn't apply to thousands of people on the water.
The first thing I do upon tying up to the gas dock is turn the battery switch to OFF. It's what they teach you to do in boating class!!

I agree.

As well as the fact that he pumped a TON of gas into the boat before noticing it.

Here's the bottom line.

A lot of Rich people get so used to having everything done for them and having everyone ELSE THINK for them, that they get quite DUMB. Not all, but a lot.

Take your average spoiled guy + alcohol + having to gas up HIS OWN boat.......and I can see it happening.

What does that mean?

This guy should have his fueling privileges revoked. If i were his first mate I would let him know that he's not allowed to touch any gas line again.

You're getting off track. It's got nothing to do with being rich or poor, spoiled or not. Stupid comes in all tax brackets.

Yeah but if you can mix in a little class envy, you can feel even better about yourself.

In our marina attendant fuels all boats. Everybody including caprtain must get out of the boat and stend on the dock.

Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

I worked at a marina 20 some odd years ago as a gas dock attendant. Had one boat come in, it was probably a 26 foot or so cuddy if memory serves. He had docked with the fuel filler on the other side - and didn't invite me to come aboard with my filler and hose. Rather, he held his hand up to take it, so I handed it to him. He went to the other side of the cuddy where the filler was, whipped out his 2-dowel fuel cap key, opened up the cap and started filling. It immediately started burbling back up, like the vent wasn't working properly. He tried for several minutes to get it to take fuel. At this point, I asked if I could try. I climbed aboard and took a peek over the far gunwale - at which point I noticed the deck fitting for the filler said "WATER". He had been pumping gas into the onboard water tank. About 1 foot aft of the water filler was the "GAS" filler fitting, cap still firmly in place. We spent the afternoon siphoning out the gas & water mix, flushing it with soapy water, and repeating until the owner finally said good enough. I never saw him again after that, so I don't know if it damaged his water system or not...

Anywa, schtuff happens.

Thats where Sea Ray puts them & on 99% of the other brand of boats out there also puts them there.:)
Where is yours ??.

I have a Maxum and the battery switch is outside of the engine compartment, easy to get to and switch off while fueling.

That man will never forget this very bad mishap which could have been deadly for all parties involved. I think he's learned his lesson and then some.

I'm reacting to some things in the OP. I live amongst the filthy rich and I can tell you for sure that they get used to having so much handed to them and done for them that it would make them appear "stupid"

Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

Used to see that crap way to often when I worked in marinas. Some people have more money than brains. Sure don't want some teenager telling them what to do. I am another big supporter of mandatory licensing.

I worked a gas dock in H.S. too. At that Marina, only the attendants could handle fuel hoses. Pretty much every weekend, some drunk ace rich guy would come in there with all that "Nobody touches my boat" crap. After a breif conversation where he was told the rule applied to EVERYONE, a lot of them would have a fit and go through the whole "I'm going to the other Marina!!!" Funniest part of the whole thing is the same guy owned BOTH marina's, so he gets over there and gets told the same thing!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, man, that job was a riot a lot of times, but rich ppl can def. be a pain sometimes. BUT, I also got a $100 tip once too, and $10 was pretty much the norm, so it had perks too!

Re: almost blew up!!! scary!!

well i def. thank everyone for their input.. and its nice/funny hearing yalls experiences needless to say when all was drained and all was said and done, the girls and including myself in this category at the time :D hid behind the big ice bag storage cooler and waited fr him to start the boat... luckily enough no big BOOM, and for the people worried about the gas in the water, it was towards minimal nice little sheen around the boat but when that started happening thats when the gas attendant started asking questions, at that marina they dont really offer to fuel for you its sort of one of those things you have to tip extra for granted we always tip if the attendant hands us the nozzle and rings up the gas and whatnot... so yea it sucked... ruined half our day and his boat thus far (you dont really know how many little plastic pieces are in the eng. comp. until they all melt ) but luckily enough we escaped with our lives, they guy is not an idiot it was an honest (and costly) mistake... but like one other poster had noted the gas and rod holder are DIRECTLY next to each other an inch or two tops apart, and after looking at it again with the cap off they look identical... o well lesson learned and i bet noone who reads this post will ever do it again... thanks again yall!!! happy/safe boating this summer!!!!

Honest mistake?!?!?!?! Whatever, he's a tool, we can only hope he lets someone else fuel up from now on.

Glad you're still alive. ;)

An honest mistake doesn't happen when you're drinking trying to fuel your boat.

Save the drinks for when you're tied up for the night. That's what i do.
