Are boaters highly motivated people?

Just got me thinking... Think of the time it takes to own a boat, enjoy it, and take good care of it. Long before the guests arrive, and long after the guests leave, I'm prepping the boat, cleaning the boat ect. And most guests that come to the lake can't even be on time and have their crap together. I love the company though, that's what it's all about. But I don't think the average person knows what it takes to own a boat.

Seems I'm a self motivated individual. That's what it takes I think to enjoy a boat and all the other stuff that goes along with it. I actually enjoy detailing, adding a 2nd battery, tinkering, stuff like that.

Do the rest of you consider yourself highly motivated? Just curious

Ditto what 26aftcab said :)

I dunno. I just enjoy having the means and opportunity to get away from the crowds and traffic. I can go places that most can't and enjoy solitude when I want it. There's nothing as relaxing as dropping an anchor and sitting back with a good book and a cup of coffee while the boat rocks me.

I like the challenge of trying to 'do it better' every time I go out. Though I ***** about it sometimes, I like the fact that I always have to plan six moves ahead of what I'm doing at any given point in time. It's a major mental workout. I even like the butterflies I get every time I start out. I'm still kinda new at it and never know what new situation I'll encounter. I need to be alert and on my game.

It's all just very cool and like nothing else I've ever done.

Motivation is directly proportional to the number of years you've owned a boat. There is a reason why they say that the two best days of a boat owners life is the day you bring it home and the day you sell it.

I am highly motivated during the week ...... to get to the weekend and out on the water. I too am one who thoroughly enjoys the entire process from hook up in the driveway to putting the cover back on at the end of the day and everything in between. I agree with the other poster(s) who are motivated to do it all a bit better each time. Also, Am glad to know that I am not the only one keeping West Marine and the IBoats stores in the black too. If only the admiral understood all I am trying to do is support our economy!!

Re: Are boaters highly motivated people?

i just spent 1.5 hours on the water entertaining an out of town guest after i got off work...they didnt know that I got there 45 minutes early to prep and then stayed an hour after to clean, put away, etc....
but the 1.5 hrs with the lake to ourselves was so worth it.

I would imagine most of the regulars here are pretty self motivated but as a whole I think most people just use there boats like cars, drive them when they want then park them, that is why you see so many rotten transom, froze the block, motor won't go and the lower is full of water questions.

There are so many different types of boater, I would think a good chunk of them are very unmotivated.

Counting the number of decent looking boats at my marina just sitting, covers falling off, weeds growing around them, it's sad.

Still others have been getting pampered, restored and dropped in the water to be used and cared for all summer.

Re: Are boaters highly motivated people?

I am highly motivated to do what I want to do!!

I had a friend down the other day (a very Landlocked friend) we spent the entire weekend on the water. He made the comment "dude I love boating, but damn its alot of work"
To which I replied it is but it is worth it to me.

He said that he would probably never go if he had a boat because of all the prep, cleaning and other stuff that goes into one.

I love it and for me it is a labor of love.
I love the feel of the hull when she is waxed and buffed, I love the feel of the wind. I love the sound of the engine. I love being with my family on the water. I love it when my son rides the kneeboard. I love it when I get a good flat stretch of river and I can open her up. I love cleaning up. I love getting ready to go.
The only thing I dont love is the damn gas. But even then I love pumping it in because that means I am going to do something I love.(see above)

So yes I am a highly motivated boater, motivated to go boating and whatever it takes to get me there.

Re: Are boaters highly motivated people?

I think it all depends on what you?re doing?

If I?m going out fishing for a couple hours, I just hookup and stop at a gas station on the way and grab a coke. If I?m going camping, I make sure everything is good before I go because it would suck to get stuck on an island with a broken boat. I suppose it?s probably easier for me to get going, after all it?s only a 14? with a 9.9.

Over all, I?m not sure that I?d say motivated? I?d say more dreamers then anything else.
