1986 Mercruiser 140 HP 3.0 I had changed head gasket and starter. Idles good. When out of water, doesn't seem to be a problem, good rpm's. When in water it will cruise for about 5 min at a low speed. When I give it gas it starts to go fine but after a few minutes dies out. then trouble restarting. Bad Gas? Also noticed I had lost fuel cap some time back. What do you all think? Thanks.

Re: Engine stall

Could be bad gas, clogged filters, weak pump, A/S valve, tank vent, are any fuel lines kinked/pinched???

Check out the adults only section for reason can't reach WOT

Re: Engine stall

I had changed filters. Don't know what A/S valve is or tank vent. No kinked lines. Added sea foam and some booster to gas but no change.

Re: Engine stall

The anti siphon vavle is located right off the elbow of the pick up tube pull the tube out and clean it along with the vent which maybe part of your missing fuel cap.

Hes talking about the anti - syphon valve in the fuel tank .

sea foam and booster wont help if you have bad old gas or water accumulated in tank.

Re: Engine stall

Yea, if I "REV IT UP" when in neutral the rpm's go all the way up to like 7000. But it kinda starts poppin a lil'. Only acts up when in water and in gear to try to take off.

You are freakin' kidding right????

7K what about that seems like a good idea to even try????

That engine will hit it's redline on 2 cylinders with no load, so what you are doing is diagnosticaly irrelevent and just plain stupid. Do you have any idea what happens when pistons and valves collide? It ain't cheap.
