I have rebuild the carbs and check and adjusted the floats where needed, the motor ran like new then same old thing, sneezes coughs dies, not as bad as before the carbs, adjusted the idle, bumped it up to 700-750 in forward gear, checked and set the timing, 18 degrees BTDC, was hitting at 12 to 14 degrees when first checked. When I shake it off the trailer, takes alittle bit to start, and get away from the "No Wake Area" when I reach the open area 3 out of 5 times it will bogg out and die, just for the fun of it, I started bumping the primer solenoid about four to six times and can push through the bogg. I have moved away from the VRO and premix the fuel, sometimes it smokes as if it is pure oil then other times just barely noticable. Man do I feel like the tail wagging the dog here. It seems like a lean condition, and if there are fixed jets, it would appear to have been corrected a long time ago. I have only had this motor since May 10th, 2010. I have a Clymers and am working throught the troubleshoots, this books appears to jump around a bit.

Re: 88 GT200 (J200STLCCM) Boggs then dies 3 out 5 times...

Just a real quick add on:

The power pack is a CDI 113-6212;

Fits 1993-2001 185, 200 and 225 HP Loop Charged Carbureted Engines.CD has a 6700 RPM Limiter

Is this a big deal? My engine is a 1988 as stated above.

In the process of testing the shift switch.

Re: 88 GT200 (J200STLCCM) Boggs then dies 3 out 5 times...

The Shift switch appears to be funtioning correctly.

I picked up the adjustable spark tester and the sparks are blue on all six coils; I hooked the timing light up just to make sure that the coils are firing for the right position, the flywheel has been index marked for the six cylinders, every once and a while the Number three would show up when it should have been Number 1, I notice the miss now, and I think this is about to send me down the electronic area of the motor rather than the fuel lean area that I have been looking at.

Someone throw me a bone?

I am really confused now...

just curious what size idle jets do you have in there?

Live...I'd contact cdi at cdielectronics.com and ask them your powerpack question...I asked about a dva adapter and they responded within an hour

I believe that they are #35 on the idle and #39 on the intermediate.

I will check them again to make sure...

"I have a Clymers " you have trash. did you remove all the jets and replace all the fuel hoses from tank to carbs? 88's are border line on ethanol poisioning. sounds like clogging high speed jets, synchronization, which clymer leaves short.

get the real johnson manual. outboardbooks.com

Here is where I get the S**T kicked out of me, you see, the motor seems to run great once I get it out of the hole and up on plane, so I assumed that the high speed circuit was clear; with the high speeds being buried in the bottom of the bowl, I passed them up. As for the hoses, well they look as if they have been replaced, I used alcohol to test the hoses for ethanol compatibility, the only tubing that rubs black off with alcohol, is the very small tubing that comes off of the primer solenoid circuit. The rest of the gas hosing just cleaned up. So there again I assumed that they would be ok. I do go out of the way to four different gas stations located in my area to by my gas without the ethanol added, and that goes for all of my vehicles.

Now, that I have made a complete A## :D of myself for assuming these things, I guessing that I need to go back and correct these items and report back the results?

UPDATE...

I pulled the carbs off today and dropped the bowls off... I pulled the high speed jets, they were clear, though they did have stains, sort of like coffee, so I hosed them out with carb cleaner which brought them back to a clean brass look. Checked the float levels and put them back together. I went ahead and replaced the fuels lines, by the way, 5/32 fuel lines and hard to find in Clarksville. I could not find the primer solenoid tubing, so that didn?t change, well maybe the routing. I went through the link & sync.
I set the timing the other day at 18 degrees BTDC. Today I noticed that there is a sticker on the air box cover that reads 16 BTDC. I had the time to drag the boat to the ramp and change the timing to 16 degrees BTDC. I will water test the boat in the morning.
The jets are as follows:
#35 on the idle and #39 on the intermediate and the high speed is 62D

To those that are following; as soon as I know something I will bring it back here.

UPDATE WITH TEST RUNS OUT ON THE WATER...
After doing as stated above, I put the boat in the water this afternoon, still takes a little bit of cranking to get the motor running. The idle came in at 750 to 800 rpms in neutral, lower in gear, but it stayed running. Idled like a new motor, there will be a need for some fine tuning, for the first time since a first got the boat it ran like a new one; with one exception, when I left off the throttle after a good run, it will die, maybe 2 out of 5 runs.
The next bit information just came to me and I may have to start another thread?
When I first got this boat and motor, an earlier owner had drilled out the mid-section exhaust to relief the back pressure and it was loud, so I used two pieces of 1/8 inch aluminum to close the interior section and stainless steel cap over the exterior, and looking back, and when I say it came to me today it really came to me today, the motor would have to have been set up to run without any back pressure for it to run right, when I repaired that section, the first thing that I should have done is to set the motor for the back pressure of a stock exhaust. I did not even give that I a thought. I feel that I have got this thing to run good, now I need to figure out how to fine tune it so it is near perfect? So, to those of you guys reading this get ready for the next batch of silly questions that I may have until I am good.
So should I start another thread???

The misfire would have me call CDI to ask about the power pack.

UPDATE 3

Contact CDI and here is their reponse:

The wire being mentioned, I am guessing that it is the wire feeding the coil.
Would this be correct?

As I remember the wires feeding the coils are grouped in a plastic tube for each side...

From CDI:
Hello,
It sounds like you may be picking up a ghost pulse. Try moving the pick-up to the Orange/Blue primary wire going to the # 1 Ignition Coil. If the firing is clean, the coil may need replacing. Remember to keep the pick-up as far away from the adjoining cylinder wires as possible.

The information that I passed on to CDI:

:D:D:DLast UPDATE for this one...

I made a trip out to look for the orange and blue wire, as fate would have it, it made a loop around the #3 spark plug wire. So the neat thing to this problem is that if any one else is reading this they can check the routing of the coil trigger wires to make sure that they are NOT looped around any other spark plug wires... With this find, I am hoping that my next rip out will be even better than the last one...\

With the help that I have learned from this site alone as helped me save more money and time than I have ever thought that would happen...

Thanks to all...

But wait, I still have an 88 model engine, so I am not gone for sure...

Thanks
Jay :D

checked and set the timing, 18 degrees BTDC, was hitting at 12 to 14 degrees when first checked.

Just curious, did you set this according to Joe Reeves method? if yes then it should have been set to 14 degrees according to his instruction.

No, I set the timing in the water... At the time the first timing check, I did not have a spark gap tester. I just don't have the knowledge that is needed to trust setting up the motor without going step by stepm by a book. With that being said, I need to get the factory service manual rather than the Clymer that I have been using...

As I stated in one of my later posts, the exhaust had been drilled out on this motor b-4 I got it. I did not like the noise so I patched the exhaust and it never came to mind that the motor had been set up to run without any back pressure. So, at htis point I think that I am well on my way to having thing running as good as the new ones that we see, and wish that we could afford.

Last update, will start new post...

"I have a Clymers " you have trash.

get the real johnson manual. outboardbooks.com

The Johnson Factory Manual is waiting for me at home...

Now the real fun begins, the orange and blue wire that wrapped around the #3 spark plug wire was the ticket, run the boat last saturday and boy the difference. I am about 97% perfect. Now the fine tuning starts...:D
