A dumb question

I'm new to "new" VP and Merc I/O's...my last boat was a 85 Glastron with 3.8 GM power and an OMC outdrive. The kind that jacked up the entire motor to set the trim. Lots of lovely things would happen if you hit the tilt button with the motor running, or if you tilted it up with the trim set too high...but I digress...

Heres the question, dumb:

The impeller - on a VP it's easily accessed and looks like it would take 15 mins to change from INSIDE the boat. Mercruisers are inside the lower unit, and require much more work, and disassembly to get to.

Did I get this right, or is the "impeller" (that's located roughly where a water-pump would be on an Automotive engine) on the VP not the same thing as the impeller on a merc?

Thanks in advance...

Hi Grumulin
I'm not sure but I think you are correct.

The part on the engine is the circulation pump.

The Impeller that needs to be replaced anually and is the pick up pump is in the lower unit.
Good Luck

Re: A dumb question

So both VP and Merc have an impeller in the outdrive, as well as a "circulation" pump mounted to the motor?

You are right, VP's usually have the impeller in the lower housing. The top thingy that the fan belt attaches to is the same as the water-pump on a car, and it also has an impeller inside it, but I'm assuming your talking about the lower housing made of brass. If the outdrive is VP, it does NOT have an impeller.

The impeller - on a VP it's easily accessed and looks like it would take 15 mins to change from INSIDE the boat.

Let us know how that works out for you. Do NOT however bend on the brass housing.

Re: A dumb question

my buddy''s volvo i/o had the impeller mounted on the crankshaft pulley, like you describe, and that was the only impeller. not in the outdrive. cant say thats how yours is for certain, but it sounds the same.

Re: A dumb question

So far, all of the previous replies are WRONG.............
Volvo drives have NEVER had the raw water pump in the outdrive. That was Mercruiser and OMC that put it in the drive.
Volvo has always had engine driven raw water pumps. Depending on the engine and the model, they were belt driven or mounted on the crankshaft pulley.

Thanks...don't have one yet, that's why I'm asking. I looked at a 2000 Crownline 202BR w/VP power, and the guy pointed to the plastic cover mounted to the front of the motor when he told me he replaced the impeller last year. Then I read about needing to get into the guts of the drive on a Merc...

Since it's something that requires regular changes, it would seem that Volvo has an advantage if it's easily accessible, and doesn't require getting into the guts of the out-drive.

Can't be that easy...I must be misunderstanding something....

this vp had a little plastic cover with three allen head screws. once the cover came off the impeller just slid on. can be changed in the water very quickly. mine is a merc and is the belt driven seperate unit style, looks like a power steering pump and mounted the same way. my omc was the in the outdrive style, id never own that again.

Thank you. That seems to clear it up.

So..uh...if it's just a water pump (like I thought) why would you NOT put it where it's easy to get to, instead of burying it inside the drive?:confused:

Thats the same as I saw...right in front. I'm looking at 2000 or newer A1 or B3's w/5.0 injected power...are those mercruiser impellers / water pumps driven by the engine (and inside the engine compartment) or inside the drive?
