Hey All,

Waiting on a rebuild for my VRO, I decided to change floats and needles on outer carbs.. while i waited...all seemed relatively easy.I changed everything and cleaned all of the jets...

I went to test my work and all fired well..she ran for a while and then cut out..I pumped the primer..she was solid..I then checked the bowl drains (since I just did the work I thought maybe the bowls were not getting fuel..to my surprise they had fuel and seemed that I could pump the primeer and flush each bowl..no sweat..(phew,,I got that right!!..impressed? yeah me too!)

Ok so, on to finding out what happened.. I check for spark starting on the 2/4..nice clean strong at 7/16.. on to 1/3..no spark at 7/16 but if i closed the gap she started to spark..but i had to get pretty close.

So one bank is weak.. but if i close the gap enough she sparks.. (gap tester)

My question is basically this...Can a powerpack lose one side and not the other?

Should I be looking at coils? (the only reason I didnt swap them yet, to, follow problem was they both would have had to fail at the same time..)

Would the kill switch create a HALF problem or does that shut you down completely? could it be a simple grounding issue?...

Do the heat sensors (if my engine has them) prevent full fire only or could it casue a HALF issue..??

Just wondering where I should start, seeing is I do have spark on all 4...just weak on cyl 1/3

Thanks for the input!

Im having same problem with my 90 so dont know if i can help much but here we go.my motor cranks and runs like junk with weak spark.I tested coils and powerpack all checked good. went up a little farther to stator and found that my resistance was all over the place and spinning the engine voltage spiked. my stator and timer base will be here thursday so i will repost if my prob is gone. the service manual will give you step by step to check every component. dont be scared to swap parts side to side and see if prob follows but def get a manual.

The year of the motor makes it so much easier to check what you have and what may be wrong.

These like so many others suffer from dirty plug wire connections and bad coil grounds.
The poor plug wire end connections, the poke a sharp piece of metal thru the wire system, eventually fails. Pull the wires off the coils and test for continuity whilst twisting the end connectors. Look for a 0 ohms reading on the meter. If it is intermittent or you have difficulty in making a connection then make or purchase new wires. Your dealer should have the kits.
Remove the coil screws and check for good clean grounding.
Switch the good side coils with the bad side and see if you get a difference. After that it is most likely the switch box. Before buying a new one it is wise to check the stator windings.
The manual should provide you with the resistance measurements.

I replaced the spark wires to be sure...I had some extras and check each one for 0 ohms.. so those are good.

I havent started going to wires and checking connections, grounds, etc..but I guess that is a goos start.

with very sweak spark at all 4..I assume this eliminates the need for unplugging the big red connector and jumping the starter?? I certainly dont mind doing it, but it its intact becasue i do get spart although weak..i dont know..

I'm going out now to check ohm reading on everything!! since i do not have a DVA I assume I cant check stator output to determine if its giving what it has to to the powerpack?

Apparently your carb linkage does not use a second cam roller sleeve like mine.
Found this diagram online. Part # 30.

ok..so, after some troubleshooting with jonesg, we seemed to locate the kill circuit was shorting at the keyswitch...so I replaced that and was able to get spark.

She would catch and run for a bit but not well at all..very rough and clearly missing.. we checked spark at all 4 and we were getting it, except 1 was very weak..

end result is I ordered 4 new coils (they were ancient! i didnt know till i pulled them off to clean them a bit) and a powerpack (since it too was very old.)

Once eveything arrives ill post back with the results!

Jonesg, I never saw anything on the roller and I guess i dont need one., but i wish i knew why it wasnt touching anything....

The cam roller should have the sleeve and you need it as well as the clip to hold it on (39).

ezeke..the roller is there..its black and has some grooves in it or what look like machined flat spots. there is nothing covering the black roller..

it was mentioned that some had a clear sleave over that roller..but since i have had this engine i have never seen it.

i can take a picture and post it later

That's all that should be there, but that one needs to be replaced.

So i assume they do not come with a flat on one side?..

Is there a way to remove it? I see there is a rong clip that holds the whole thing but I dont see how that comes off..maybe a screwdriver or something..??

Re: Powrpack/spark question E140TXCDC

After seeing the roller wear on yours, especially the second wear spot on the lower half of the roller, apparently someone flipped it over when it started to wear a long time ago. Why buy a new one when you can just flip it over.

My 94 150hp has clear plastic sleeves that go over the black roller, probably due to the wear you can see in yours. Most likely it was an upgrade on the later engines to deal with the wear from vibration.

Re: Powrpack/spark question E140TXCDC

good point..i didnt consider someone would just flip it over..

riddle me this batman.. what is the purpose of the roller and how does it effect timing or throttle...???

once i move the lever forward it hits the roller and the butterflies start to get pressure to open them...so wouldthat roller in that condition throw anything out?.. Ultimately I am asking if that small bit of wear could or could not cause idling or other issues?..since things are not initiating at exactly the same time...

Re: Powrpack/spark question E140TXCDC

It's supposed to turn freely as it rides the cam, so it does not restrict. The clip is usually a very small o-ring; check that.

Part 0330130 +/- $4.00
Part 0308771 +/- $3.00
