Typically the recommendation is 2 tabs 2nd being a 2" overlay.

Lol kcassels! It could be my sweat drips. I was sweating like crazy in that confined area. I will for sure tab the transom before over lay. Tried to save some work on the deck as it isn’t really structural. The tank sits on it. It’s not going anywhere.

Any guesses on how much PB to mix up for the transom install? I’d like to make sure I have enough but not waayyyy too much. I will use any excess for fillets. I just haven’t ever done this large of an area with a notched trowel and have no idea how much to mix up. It’s 48” wide and 39” at its tallest point. How much did YOU use?

I over mixed that's for sure. I'd say a qt. and have another 1/2 qt. batch ready to mix. Anyone else have some suggestions?

Thanks kcassels! I ended up using 2 quarts of PB to stick the transom and another quart for fillets. It’s in!! The pics don’t show the filleting but they are mostly done. I probably didn’t need such a gap at the bottom, it took a fair amount of PB to fill just that area. I’ve got a little heater going in there because temps are supposed to drop tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll finish up the fillets and get her tabbed in. Maybe glass over if I have enough time.

Opinions on tabbing and covering the transom entirely THEN doing the engine stringers and tabbing them into the transom vs. doing engine stringers and tabbing/wrapping them both at same time??? Does it matter?

my thoughts get was to tab and wrap transom entirely first, then it’s sealed completely and separately from the engine stringers... what say you?

There are two kinds of bonds.

Mechanical; that's when you come back and do another glass coat over a cured coat.

Chemical; That's when you do wet on wet. Ie: repeated glass over the prior wet glass. Chemical is the strongest bonding process.
Both are satisfactory.

Thanks gents! Finished up the fillets on the transom over lunch break. I’ll let this cure, sand any points off and smooth out the garboard drain area, and then two layers of tabbing wet on wet later tonight. I’ve got the heater cranking in there as it’s only about 65f outside. Two layers of tabbing and two full over lays of 1708 should be enough right? Or should I overlay 3?

Fyi: I’ve used nearly a gallon of resin sticking the transom and filleting. I left a larger gap at the bottom than probably needed and that took a fair amount of PB. One of he pics below you can see the “blind” fillet area. That’ll be fun to glass properly as I can’t really see it very well.

Yup that is what i used according to the woodenglass formula he posted somewhere.

Pardon my ignorance for not reading back to check, but your sterndrive manufacturer has a specification for your transom thickness/flatness/parallelism. For mercruiser the thickness is 2 to 2 1/4" thick... So as far as how much 1708 to use, 2 layers should be the min, but if you need additional thickness, just add more 1708 to get to the desired thickness.

I have an AQ series Volvo. 2-2 1/4” thickness but isn’t critical like a merc as there isn’t an inner shield.

Dumb question but am I ok to use like 80 grit on the grinder to smooth out the fillets? Knock down the little nubs,etc...

40 grit on the RO sander doesn’t touch the PB. That junk is hard.

I never ask what sanding grit to use. I just use what I think will do the job. If 80 grit works, go for it.

THanks tpenfield! I ended up using 50 grit on the grinder. The sander just wouldn’t cut it.

the transom is tabbed in and one complete wrap! Two more full wraps tomorrow.

I did 5” wide strip first and then a 7” strip for the tabbing all around the perimeter. Then a complete wrap. All wet on wet. I wouldve done the other two layers but some of the corners and edges would’ve had 5-6 layers of glass from the tabs and wrap overlapping in those areas. Was thinking that might be too many layers at one time.
The last two full wraps will over the lap each other and the tabbing slightly... an inch or two each layer. Going to cut those out of the 1708 and call it a night. I’m pooped from that glassing session! I think it came out pretty good though.

exactly how i did mine, every piece of wood that had to be there was separated by glass to keep any chance of rot traveling.

Thanks guys! I am hoping to finish glassing the transom today and then get the fuel tank test fitted to try and figure out how to support the berth floor I cut out to remove it. There isn’t much room around the edges vertically for a cleat... I’ll get some pics when I set the tank in to pick your brains!

i still have to glue the neoprene strips to the tank.... they were just kinda laying there before. How can I know if the strips I removed are neoprene and not just rubber?? It looks like they originally used them as straps all the way around the tank like a belt. But they were broken and just kinda laying there..I pulled them out easily prior to removing the tank. They arent deteriorated in any way and didn’t leave any marks on the tank...
