1963 Glasspar Avalon Restoration

We just got a 1963 Glasspar Avalon as a restoration boat - it is my wife's moms boat that has been in the family for years, but has not seen water since the late 1980s.

I figured that we could at least get it back to water-worthy, but have no real intention of doing a full restoration, just restore/repair it enough to get it back on the water.

That being said, I'm a bit concerned with the condition of the boat. The floor needs to be replaced, the gelcoat/fiberglass needs a good cleaning, and I'm afraid the transom might need to be replaced.

The engine needs to be replaced as well as the electronics, wires, cables, etc.

Where do I start!??

whether you want it to be or not, it's probably in for a full stringer, transom, deck job. Depending on which motor it is and the condition it is in ( has compression ect... ), it's quite likely cheaply fixable. Very few Johnson/ Evinrude parts are NLA with the exception of electric shift lower unit parts.

motor is garbage and will need to be replaced.

Stringers I take it are what go under the floor (or deck)? to add support?

Yes stringers run front to back. They are wood covered in fiberglass in 95% of the time.

So what would be the best way to take off the deck to expose the stringers? Just cut around where the deck meets the sides? or leave a lip?

Yes, use a circular saw set to about 5/8" deep and cut with the narrow edge closest to the side. Pry bars, Hammer and Chisels will do the rest. 4 1/2" grinder with a backup Pad and 24 Grit Resin Coated Sanding Discs will do the rest.

Like matt167, this will probably be a full restore. You will have fun with the Restore!
