Definitely you're not a Tohatsu/Nissan lover. You've missed the 9.8 & 18 HP. The 9.8 beats any 8 downward, 18 beats any 15 downward any time to any other brands HP models. Ain't that sweet..

Assume not everybody has new engines on their inflatables and there's still lots of 2 strokes mentioned HP models currently being used. There's a 4 stroke 9.8 HP engine too.

I have a 40hp Evinrude 2 stroke hanging off the back, and this poll completely skipped anything above 25hp. I take offense to it excluding me ;)

You actually have an inflatable with a 40hp motor on it? How big is it and how do you move it? Maybe I should add a disclaimer about the motor being portable

If you can lift a 30-40-50 HP, then they are all portables.

I've got about 8 HP on a 14 foot KaBoat that I use for boating. Sometimes I use a paddle to save some extra fuel, but I think the 8 HP does a heck of a job.

Yes I do have an inflatable SIB with a 40hp hanging on the boat. My boat is a Zodiac Futura Sport GT, that is 4.2 meters. I can pick the motor up, but typically use an engine hoist since it is far less work. My boat lives on a trailer as setting up and taking apart a boat doesn't sound like fun. It is actually pretty easy to move around since I built transom wheels out of a pair of 19" Wheeleez wheels. I also took a wheelchair and heavily modified it to pull my boat over the beach. So yes I would consider it a portable inflatable. I haven't launched from the trailer in probably a year.

Is one 2 stroke and the other one 4 stroke? 4 stroke motors are heavy. We have to be carefull adding all that weight to at transome

Ronald, when someone is shopping for a 4stroke send them to me, I have enough Horror stories to have people think long and hard before buying a 4stroke. Don't get me wrong (knock on wood) I love my 15 merc this baby has done be justice so far but the weight costs me to have my outboard in my car for weeks before i decide to bring it upstairs. It is still in my car from last wednesday when i went out lol. I know this sounds terrible but i will say it anways. Sometimes i wish for someone to break into my car and steal the 15 so i can buy either buy a brand new honda 20 which weights 104lb or buy a 2 stroke older engine which weights 80lbs. BOTTOM LINE: I towed 2 people already with 2 strokes and when everyone is out of gas i still have more then half a tank. I think i will need to carry 2 stroke oil in my bow bag to keep sinister on the water for a bit longer lol. (SHOTS FIRED) LOL

Weimed We may need to start another thread after this forum software is fixed , just going into detail on 2 stroke vs 4 stroke engines. That was my initial mindset when I started this post and the What type of motor post. The problem with 2 stroke vs 4 stroke comes into play when you are trying to setup your boat. Since most boats are made outside of North America the horse power rating is really for 2 stroke motors. The spec should really be. Total weight on transom. It is amazing to me what some consider portable. It might be an age thing. If one person can not lift the motor by themselves then to me it is not portable. There is a huge difference between having a trailer and not having a trailer For the purpose of carrying in your car that would mean the largest 4 stroke you could use by yourself is 9.9hp. That weighs in at 92 pounds The next weight up is 15hp or 20 hp which both weigh 104 pounds. Once you get to 104 pounds you probably have a trailer You need a motor dolly to carry 104 pounds It's not a bad idea at 92 pounds A 9.9hp 4 stroke weighs more than a 15hp 2 stroke A 15 hp 2 stroke weighs about 77 pounds You are looking at 92 pounds for the 4 stroke vs 77 pounds for the 2 stroke That is a difference of 15 pounds and 5hp That doesn't even take into account the additional torque on the transom for that 4 stroke motor

Depends on conditions and load of course. My boat is setup for scuba diving, so the prop is a lower pitch. I also have a wing on the outboard that probably takes a mile or two off the top end. So with a light load, and rough water conditions, I top out at 28mph.

Weimed I think that people are looking at engines all wrong. You take the weight of the boat. The engine can not weigh more than the boat If you ran a 15hp 2 stroke, then you will probally wind up with a 9.9 4 stroke 4 stroke engines are sized differently to deal with local regulations. For example a 8hp and a 9.8, 9.9 are all the same engine. The issue is how they have to be registered and taxed. A 4 stroke 15hp and a 20 hp are the same The 4, 5 and 6 hp engines are the same Again the re,Galatians where you live determine which one you get

I'm hoping this 2003 2 stroke 8hp merc is enough to get me around on my new Saturn SD470. I did the weight calculation thing and said I should be able to hit 20mph, not building it for towing, building for trolling salmon and fishing lakes :)

I hope you get to 20mph myself Brook. Unfortunately 20mph is unrealistic. I barely scratch 20 on my 15hp running a 350 size boat.
