Looking for some expert advice...Pulled the outdrive to check things on the checkmate after it's maiden voyage....I thought something Wasn’t right……when I drained the lube there was water in the lube…..when I pulled the drive there was gear lube in the bellows but no water. The drive bellows looks new. So I need to replace the upper drive gear lube seal.
Bought a spanner wrench and took the upper drive gear assemble out last night.
  1. Obviously need a new seal..there is a 3/32” gap under the lip in-between the shaft and lip.
  2. Not really a groove, but there is a step down where the seal rides compared to the rough surface where the seal does not rest.
  3. Need to replace the u - joints
  4. The intermitted shift shaft…you can pull up on the shoe and move it side to side about a 1/8”
  5. In the upper housing there is a black mark where the outer bearing rides in the housing....no groves, just a black mark.
Can you all look at the pictures and see what you think.

have to use photobucket, no step down area on the yoke, if you pull the upper shift shoe up it does move a bit

I dont know why i can see it but no-one else. I use the upload attachment button to load pics from my computer
.
Was not sure on the shoe movment....So that's proly good...of course plan to pressure test when back together.

BT - do you think the upper housing is ok? ie...the black mark

I seen a rebuild kit for $159.00 new short shaft yoke and all the gaskets and seals + 2 ujoints....I think im going that route

Found a crossover part number to get auto ujoints....Auto Zone 1-6301..... $10 bucks a ujoint with a 2 yr warranty...they are made in China, but thats what im going with.
Watched achris video on rolling torque method....i have the spacer in-between the bearings so i only need to torque to 70-80 ft pounds.

Now he used a speedi sleeve to repair the yoke shaft..... Thats what i would like to do...repair my yoke....My question is does anyone have info on ID size - length - where to buy.. ect..

Ideas are welcome...Thanks

Thanks....BT you are the only one out there answering topics.

Trying to understand how the outer race bearing rides in the upper housing case........It's not a press fit becouse the assemble slides out to service....So that outer race spins in the case..Right?

You can see the pic's right? If so how do you feel about the upper housing...Black mark?

Hard to explain, send a number to me at marine engine dot com if you need a verbal.
If you look at the assembly you will see that the castle nut pushes against the seal and O ring and that pushes against the outer race of the bearing that in turn pushes the large outer ring against the second bearing outer race that stops at the raised ridge in the case where the shims go..

I think i follow...When you torque the nut on the gear side of the shaft you are torqueing the gear down.... then when you install the assembley into the upper case and torque the castle nut you are setting the preload on the bearings and pushing on the tapperd bearing outward to seat the outer race in the case. Correct?
So in turn the black wear mark in the case means the outer race was spinning in the case. Correct?
So the castle nut lossened to some sort and let everything wobble a bit.

Question..... is my upper case shot? It's not grooved it just has a wear mark from the bearing spinning. It's aluminum too....I think there would be some tolerence to deal with.

Thanks BT

no

the pinion nut on the gear sets the preload/rolling torque on the bearings

the retainer nut, along with the shims sets the drive gear height
