Mercruiser 8.1 Oil Line Routing Issues

Hey guys, I have a 2008 8.1L Mercruiser that came to me in pieces from a machine shop. The owner of the boat was getting frustrated with the machine shops inability to put the "extras" on the block so he handed it to me with the best of intentions and a big grin. I've put the beast back together and she looks great and is just awaiting its test fire but I've come up with one huge problem. This particular engine has a remote oil system that mounts to the port-front side of the engine. Also on the port side of the engine is a heat exchanger which the oil lines are routed into. The oil line at the rear of the heat exchanger goes to the fitting near the oil filter block off plate. This plate is the part that takes place of the old oil filter location before routing to the remote oil filter. So my question to you fine folks is... Where does the forward oil line go from the heat exchanger? The line has a memory that would suggest that it screws into a block plug in the side of the engine, (see pics) but after removing the plug I've realized that the hole is WAY too big. See pictures. I can't find literature on the oil routing that actually shows where it goes into the engine at. There are two smaller plugs that are under the oil filter block off plate but the hose doesn't want to head in that direction naturally. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Ok my computer will not play nice with photos. I'm sure you can picture my problem location. Thanks in advance.
PS My computer seems to have issues posting as well so there may be a duplicate post.

Hi there, the problem with posting photos is going to be more of an issue with iboats new software vs your computer. Loading the photos to something like photobucket.com and posting a link may work better. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...0feUezB5UNFtLC0fLAkXLag&bvm=bv.72197243,d.cGU

Are you asking about hose # 27? Maybe the "parts description" will help give you a better idea. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...g&inbr=12826&bnbr=220&bdesc=Remote+Oil+System

Maybe doing a 496 image search may help you see something near the remote oil filter area.

Thank You for the link Fun Times, It is in fact the #27 in the diagram. I've found this diagram before and the same problem still persists. #26 in the diagram was also in the box of parts that came with the initial install but I can't seem to locate where it goes. The picture in the link doesn't actually show me where the line goes, just that it floats out into space. I own the manual for this particular engine and it is of no use for this problem.

I did a 496 search about a week ago and no luck there either but good idea :joyous: I've even done a search on Youtube for a possible video that may have simply showed my problem area by mistake while showing off the engine. I would have never imagined that something that appears so simple, would give me such a run for my money.

Took a bit of scratching my head but I looks like item 26 attaches to item 19 where the oil filter adapter. The other end of the adapter attaches to line No 27

I think posts numbers 6 and 12 might help give you an idea of where to look.

This diagram is pretty close, http://www.perfprotech.com/store/app_themes/ppt/images/product-specs/864747B-1.pdf

If not, my next suggestion would be to post a question over on OSO asking one of the members to go out and take a photo of their late model 496 remote oil hose routing. Lots of 496's hang out over there.;)

Let us know what you find, good luck.:)

I got all excited there for a second AllDodge, but after putting the two pieces together I've found that they are both male ends and thats never the beginning of a fun story. Thanks for the attempt. I'm still scratching my head.

Thanks Fun Times. Your diagram is by far the most valued. Mysteriously the part I need seems to disappear behind the oil cooler with no definite path or home. Figures, just my luck. I will keep up the good fight and let you guys know what I find if I find anything.
