I have a 70HP Evinrude E70TLESB that I am having some issues with. I bought the boat two years ago and it ran fine but would flood/stall out at full throttle. I took it to a "mechanic" last year and he basically didn't fix the problem and stopped corresponding with me. I didn't get the boat back until the end of the season and started working on it myself early this spring. So far I have set the timing via the Joe Reeves method. The manual states maximum throttle advance is 19BTDC, I set it at 15BTDC. I used the top spark plug (which I believe is #1?) I verified all 3 coils are firing. I have replaced the spark plugs and wires. I have replaced all of the fuel lines and filter and verified no leaks. I removed the VRO system / pump and am premixing a 50:1 ratio. I installed this fuel pump: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200542169938 . I have a new battery. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can start the engine, it just runs rough and dies immediately when put into gear. I tried retarding/advancing the timing a degree in each direction but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Careful when you start changing timing on a system that never goes out of adjustment !----As stated you start with a compression test.--------And does the hose for the tell tale come off the side of the block or the top ?

I just did a compression test and got ~100PSI on all 3 cylinders.

I forgot to mention...I did 3 carb kits. I replaced all of the parts except the small metal bowl things you have to drill/punch out. I cleaned them while they were out as well.

Link and synch would be the next step if your confident all your repairs were done properly.

Ill check the manual for these tomorrow. It seems everything in the manual requires some special tool that was made by evinrude/johnson. If you have a simplified technique for this I would love to hear it. Thanks.

maybe check if your fuel tank is venting, and your primer bulbs the right direction, you never know.

ive checked the fuel pump vent. it's good. not sure what you mean about the primer bulb being the right direction? the engine starts, just runs poorly.

Have you checked the condition and routing of the recirculation lines? These are the little tiny I.D. hoses that drain the manifolds of excess fuel.

You might want to retest for spark. When the engine is running, pull the top plugwire off the plug. The engine should slow down. Reattach #1 plugwire and pull off #2. Each time you pull a plugwire, the rpm's should drop. If you pull a plugwire off and nothing happens, it's not firing and bears closer inspection.

Jake,---Are you sure that there are recirc hoses on a 3 cylinder engine ???---Or are those passage ways internal on a 3 cylinder block ??

I had left a pile of manuals on the bench tonight to bring up to answer some of these posts and I left without them. The admiral will complain if I go back down there because I always find something else to do.
