A 3.0 4 cylinder is about 130 hp a 4.3 V6 has the be at least 175 and could be about 210 in a more powerful version.
This may all be labeled on the motor.Displacement, hp, maybe even some tune up specs. The gear ratio may be on the out drive.
A lightly loaded 20 ft 4.3 should be crowding 50.

Ok, I believe you. If was an email from Bayliner support that said 131hp. That seemed low to me also. Plus, what you say makes sense, if I get my RPM's up another 1,000 to 4,600 with the correct prop I should see higher speeds. I am at 41mph now, so near or at 50 should be doable.

I could not find anything online specific to it. 1991 Bayliner Capri 2050br. They also said I have a 31gal fuel tank, but that seems correct based on how much fuel I put in and how much was in there.

Thanks for the info.

Do you know your engine serial number? It should be on the spark arrestor, look hard for it then go to mercurymarine.com, then click "Part & accessories", then "Mercury Parts catalog" and click "Launch Parts Catalog", then enter your serial number and click search, it will take you right there. With that you can find anything you want right here on iBoats.

That being said you should not be fighting it to start, my '06 3.0 has a carb and it starts first time every time, anything else is not acceptable (I do have TKS).. I believe in fixing before it breaks, so every year, plugs, cap, rotor, every 2 years, add wires and carb kit. If you have never done a carburetor kit and are not comfortable doing it your self then get it done once anyway, you will love the way it runs, todays gas can be hard on carb gaskets and such. My gauge only bounces very slightly, it's dampened well and only bounces a bit when it's pretty low, so yours could be normal, could have a sender issue, which is user replaceable. I fill it completely before every outing, the cost is the same, actually I fill it on the way home, then she's ready to go when the lake is calling.

I would like to see you get more RPM for sure, but don't try changing the prop before she's tuned up and running good. You really should get clean oil, clean gear fluid, tune up and carb overhaul, get that baby running good, strong and smooth then look at your WOT, you will be so happy with it and confident on the water you will thank yourself...I did. :joyous:

Awesome. Agreed. I do have my engine serial so I will look that up. I plan to take it in to my local marine store this weekend. They will have it all week. Replacing a couple gauges, adding a 2nd battery. They do a full service including pulling and inspecting the drive. My expectation is that it will start good, and run much better. Good advice on the prop. I do want a 4 blade for the wake boarding and water skiing. But yes, I may get lots more rpms once she is tuned well.

Thanks for the advice, and I am looking forward to a great summer !!

I emailed Merc support, gave them my engine serial number. so I have the 4.3L V6 with the 2bbl carb, and its rated at 155HP. So maybe I am in the ball park.
Still need another 1,000 rpm. Will see how she does after the tune up :). Maybe at some point I can do some engine mods, get more HP out of it :)

Nope -- you have one or the other -- not 130 HP 4.3 V6. Open the cover, look at the engine and count the spark plugs. If you see four in a row on one side of the engine you have a 130 HP 4 cylinder. If there are three on each side you have a 4.3 V6. Or look at the distributor. If you count 7 total plug wires (6 plus the coil wire) its a V6. If you see five (four plus the coil) you have a 4 cylinder. And before you spend money on a tach, prop, and other things why not get the engine running properly. It should idle all day without a hiccup. Since it is not, something is obviously wrong. A new prop and tach does not fix that problem but it may simply mask it.

I plan to take it in for service this weekend. And it is the V6 as you can see in the picture. Merc says (from the serial number) its a 2bbl carb and 155hp. I keep hearing the smallest 4.3L is 175hp. So not sure. But I am sure a tune up will help !! :)

My bad, they should be right using the serial number. All the charts I have start at 175 They must be newer than yours.
To further complicate things I have one chart that covers 69 - 2005 4.3 A 1 84 - 90 175 hp.
Alpha 1 gen 2 91 - 2005 175 hp. Information for buying new stern drives.
