I just had a guy come look at a boat I have for sale. It has a '91 or '93(can't recall) 175hp blackmax on it. The marine place I bought the boat from said the compression checked good and they rebuilt the carbs. The previous owner brought it in with running problems but it was determined to be contaminated center fuel tank, I use an external tank. That's why they rebuilt the carbs.
Any way, the guy says my motor is shot and offered $1000 less than I'm asking. This blackmax smokes like a freight train(more like a steam locomotive) when you start it up(which I've read is normal for a blackmax). It continues to smoke like that for several mins(like 6-8) until warm and doesn't do it that bad at all after you've been using the boat and you come back to idle. I'll admit it's been running a tad rough at idle, but I also think the idle speed is turned down too low. It HAS died on me a handful of times after I start it and back away from the dock after warm up. It's also done the same when coming back to the dock. Seems to do it when you shift in and out of gear. No big deal as the motor starts right back up, it even fires right up when cold, I mean right up.
Only other issues I can think of is a low oil alarm twice. All I did to fix it was move the oil reservoir float my hand and it fixed it, it's always been full of oil. The last time I moved the float the oil started to overflow, I know I read something about the pressure bleed off valve perhaps being bad somewhere. Maybe that's why it smokes so much?
Nothing else I can think of other than that. I've always thought it ran well. Does 40 knots at WOT @ 5500 rpm on a 20' boat. I usually cruise at 3K rpm giving me about 23-25 knots. Doesn't miss a beat on the water. You need to turn the idle up a bit to restart when you shut it off for a gas fill. But I do think it may run a little too rough at the no wake speed of 7 knots at about 1500 rpm.
Guy said he used to work on OB motors and the mercury black max wasn't a good motor and most have been replaced, I've read the opposite. It also sounds a little weird at idle because of some exhaust outlet or something the bobs up and down in the water, makes a weird little sucking sound.
On another note, he said my boat was too tippy(when on the gunwales) and that it listed at the dock. It has about an inch of water in the bilge from being moored in the rain. Not sure what anyone could have done to the hull to make it tippy. It's got quite a V to it and the beam isn't all that great, tons of free board though. Whats this guy is on? I'm tempted to sell it to the first person to make an offer as I need the dock space for my "good" boat.
So does the motor sound like "junk"
Any insight would be great.. thanks
