I can't get the points set correctly

Install of new coils, points and condensers on a 1970 25 hp Evinrude model 25002C. I worked in a gas station in the 60's and thought I understood points. Bringing the lobe and rubbing block to the stamped word "set" area and adjust points to apx .02 is no problem but on rotation the points never close. Using an ohm meter and readjusting the points so they open on time results in a gap of no more than .0015 and that will never work. What am I missing? Also the factory timing marks on the flywheel have been damaged and only one can be seen and used for the ohm test / set.

Check to see if the points are binding on the pivot.

If not binding, the points sets may be too far down on the post. You need a solid closed position before setting the gap.

gapping one set, then rotating 180 degrees, right? (half turn)

OK, you need to make some simple observations. So the points are .020" on the high point of the cam, but do not close on the low side. That begs the question--when they are supposed to be closed, but are not, is the rubbing block still touching the cam (holding them open)? There should be clearance between the rubbing block and cam when they are closed.

Perhaps you misunderstand.----When using the timing marks and an ohmeter there is no need to check the gap when they " open "

That is very true. Now i'm wondering--post #1 says when using the timing marks, the points only open .0015". Is that a decimal error, or does he actually mean what he said (one and a half thousandths). Or does he mean .015"

I do not think the points are binding on the post. The cam is fine and engine ran well just the day before but it was simply time to do good maintenance. Yes, the gap when open, on the "set" area was .0015 because when gap is set to .02 the points do not close at all so this time setting points to open on "time" resulted in the .0015 gap which is not good.. The armature does have a slight amount of play. I will check for clearance when the points are closed. Curiously the points are not 100% face to face on the contact. All good things to check, thank you.

Think you might not have the points assembled correctly. Might want to google "evinrude points assembly" or something similar for a pic. Properly assembled and on the post, the contact points should line up.

It sounds like yours are not properly spring loaded in their assembly, for lack of a better description.

I am very puzzled.

Either the points are the wrong type.
Or you have incorrectly installed them
Or you are adjusting them incorrectly
Or the cam is missing .

Easy enough to check that the cam is present

As far as adjusting is concerned they should be set to 0.02" when the wiper is on the highest point of the cam ie when they are open at their widest.

You should find installation instructions in the manual at http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1956-1970johnsonevinrude.html#/0 but the photos/ illustrations are pants.

Comparing them with the old ones should confirm that you have the correct parts
