Hello, Everyone,

I'm currently restoring a 1974 Bayliner 1600 Cascade, it's an old tri-hull, And I have been trying to find information on this boat but it is Very hard to find. this will be my first Boat, I'm going to replace the Floor and Transom, I will be doing much of the Repair myself, I have already been reading up and watching Videos of how to do this Correctly, which is what I want to do it, I fiqure if I'm doing All this work I might as well do it right the first time, I have already Removed the seats and Carpet, and I'm down to the floor and ready to remove the Boat Cap once I get ready to remove the Outboard engine.

My First question is The Deck is Really thin, It appears to be about 1/8" of an inch or less, is it just fiberglass or a Really thin piece of plywood then fiberglassed over?

and also removing the old gelcoat is it good to walnut blast it? or just use a good Orbital Sander?

and what the weight or max weight is?

and I believe it has the original Evinrude outboard I think it is a 105 or 115hp and I'm thinking of adding a fishfinder or stereo would the charge from the outboard be enough for this from the motor or would i need another battery?

Thanks ahead for your Help and Information, I will post pictures of the boat

Welcome aboard.

your deck is fiberglass over wood, and the wood has long since rotted away if your down to only the fiberglass.

here is a link to the DIY sticky. read links #14, then #2, #3, #4a, and 4b.

http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...r/295740-how-to-s-and-other-great-information

why do you need to remove your old gelcoat? spider cracks? post pictures. usually the gel coat is in good shape and simply needs a buff.

however for removing gel and other fiberglass, your going to need a mechanical means such as a grinder or DA. make sure to wear the proper PPE

Hello, Scott

And Thanks again, WoW, I never thought it would be that rotten, But that makes perfect sense, So what would be a good size deck thickness to use 1/2", 3/4", ?

I will definitely post pictures and Any information is appreciated, And yes the old Gel coat has spider cracking, and a main reason i'm going to do alot of fiberglassing underneath the boat as well, So with this much work i just wanted to repaint the boat,

As the previous owner use to beach it alot, And the old gel coat has cracked and peeled away from the fiberglass and also worn it down.

And Definitely Thanks for the safety info,

I will be tearing out the old deck this week as well

Thanks again, Cliff

You should be fine with one battery for these needs unless you go adding an amp and what not.

As the previous owner use to beach it alot, And the old gel coat has cracked and peeled away from the fiberglass and also worn it down.

You will need to replace the glass on the places where the beaching damaged the hull. Afterwards you can gelcoat or paint, which ever you prefer.

The pic shows the deck which will be removed and the foam under it. The deck can be 1/2 inch with glass covering. You can use thicker wood and it will be more solid, but also adds weight. The deck will be installed and glassed in, then foam will need to be poured in to fill the void. The holes seen in the deck are for foam venting when poured in.

The sides of the boat are probably nothing but glass and gelcoat. The thickness in the older boats are not much more then 1/4 inch

Thanka again Ezmobee,

I really appreciate the help, And it was just going to be a simple stereo, no amp or anything else except maybe a USB charger, but that would be it

Thanks again

Thanks AllDodge

I appreciate the Help, I have another question I was Thinking about today and trying to get some info on repairing the hull, Would it be a good Idea to use I want to use the Term "peanut butter" resin mixed with fiber to repair places on the Hull? or just use the Standard fiberglass matt and resin and just Sanded down? And would one offer more strength over the other?

And Thanks again for the Help this information is really helpful

A second battery probably isn't necessary but I need the comfort level knowing it's there if I run into any issues. lmho. Alot more definitive solutions will be made once the cap is off. Take a million pics and measurements for reference later. Save glass components that can re used when you put her back together. See if any wood under the decks can be used as templates for the new wood.

Here's a great read by WoodonGlas

Thanks Kcassells,

I really appreciate it, I was wondering if it would be possible to reuse the old deck fiberglass, all that i think is left is just the glass decking and just sand it and resin it back to a new piece of plywood , since as Scott Danforth suggested earlier is probably more than likely rotted away, or would it be in my best interest to just reglass it? and that sounds like a good idea to get a template of the stringers, i will be removing the decking today i hope, put i will definitely take alot of pictures, and post them as well,

and thanks again

The making of PB is used to fill voids, it does stick but does not have much structural strength. I would not use any of the old glass that came out of the boat. You need new stuff to create a bond that will hold

You will want to use fresh plywood for the deck, Acx, Bcx typically found at most big box stores. Don't bother to save the glass of the floor you will want that all new also. Glass things to save are more like boxes, seats, molded components. ..

Thanks Alldodge

And after reading some more on these forums the information that you and other people provide is invaluable, And i will likewise share information and knowledge learned as well,

I will go about using new glass for the good bond that you suggest, thanks again.

Use a standard drill bit about the same diameter of the our head of the rivet. I used a 3/8 bit and it cuts the head off leaving the center.
