1997 merc 4.3 - recently took this motor out of my old boat and put it in this one... went from a shitty tks setup on the last boat to a regular electric choke on this one. doing its first fire in this boat. boat fires up and runs great but idles high ( havent set idle yet with this whole new setup) after about 20 seconds it shuts off and wont restart. if i pump the throttle to full throttle 1 time it will refire for a second or 2 and die right off again. giving it constant gas while cranking just makes it pop out the carb. its done this 3 days in a row, only had time to check after work so im not sure how long it takes before it will restart again... im gonna go try again in about 20 minutes.
i ruled out the fuel pump, its the pump from my other boat that worked, you can hear when its running, and when it stalls out you can still hear the pump running. i also bypassed the oil pressure switch which made the pump kick on instantly and it still wouldnt start with that bypassed
if i pump the carb by hand i can see it shooting gas, so the bowl isnt being ran dry.
things that may be significant but i really dont think they are:
-the original fuel pump was dead, so i retrofitted the one from my other boat. they are both low pressure pumps, i just cut off the original connector and soldered on the one for the new pump - as stated it works fine and i jumped it and pumped 5 gallons out of the tank with no issues.
-the original oil pressure switch was corroded and broken, so i took the one from my tks setup, once again all i had to do was solder on the new connector and it appears to be working fine as well
these 2 wires are the only ones not connected. the purple one i assume is for setting timing, and im not sure about the black one. it wasnt connected to anything on the bad motor when i pulled it.
