Time to check out the whole cooling system i think.
Maybe someone can jump in with a way to check this without the motor being built first.
Its at the machine shop trying to sort out the damage.

Water comes in through the exhaust cover, then into the 'chest' between the cylinder banks. There's a wide port at the bottom of each pair of cylinders where it starts major flow, and a little bleed hole at the top, leading into the area under the lifting eye/cap plate. The block is pretty easy to confirm coolant flow.

Ok gents been distracted from the engine for a while, but will manage to get a few hours in this week.
So i cleaned the carbs ready to fit new carb kits.

The jet feeding the #3 cylinder had a bit of grit?? or something in it.
I think that may have caused the pot to run lean hence the wasted piston.

The lower unit gear oil was clean no sings of water ingress. I have the seals should i fit them ???
I think it may open a can of worms. I have no idea how hard it will be to get the bearing carrier out. It may be more trouble just waiting to happen.

Regarding the water pump. I have found the cause of the over heating. Who ever fitted the pump went ott with epoxy when they were fitting the cup to the outer.
This thing was doomed to over heat like this.
As you can see half the intake pipe is blocked and looks like it was pumping sand at the same time.

Is the lower unit good ?----- checked the gear oil ?----Looked at the water pump impeller to get an idea on how this motor was maintained.----Post some pictures of impeller / housing when you get it out.----Do you have a seal kit for this motor ?----

The oil on the L/U is OK no sign of water, but in two minds to change the seals or not.

Hang in there!

Update to the build.
I have installed all new crank seals checked all bearings,
Removed all casting marks from the block and intake.
Balanced all the piston assemblies. New wiseco pistons.
Port matched carbs to intake manifold.
Lapped reed cages fitted CCMS Sport reeds,
Replaced all seals on L/U
Now in the process of making up a new wiring harness and general assembly.
Looking at getting it wet for next weekend. 27th of April.
Will add more pics as i find them.
I will be looking for some advice re-jetting the carbs.
Carbs are 1.5/16th" Mains are 67c photo288716.jpgphoto288717.jpgphoto288718.jpgphoto288719.jpgphoto288720.jpgphoto288721.jpg

I did it was the old ones in the pic of the conrods

Good. I've read some here will use them again, but for security at the price (I have Scottish blood in me) I'd rather spend $30 on bolts than grenade my motor.

Reed cages lapped on 400 wet&dry taped to a sheet of tempered glass.
This gives the sport reeds a better chance to close perfectly.
