Ever been rear ended when trailering your boat? Two weeks ago I was, just getting back to work today.Boat is in the shop with $1490.63 damage to just the motor, after that is fixed, the boat will have to be taken to a glass shop to be repaired.
I myself had built this boat, and with a direct hit to the motor knocking it up to the back of my truck, the transom is ok.Can't see how!The motor was on a transom saver. The keel up front rode up on the spare tire, riping a 14" hole all the way thru the hull on the keel about 2" wide, pop the whench off the trailer. What helped is;I add some 1/2" rope up front to tie it down(4 raps),and 2 straps across the back of the boat.I trailer this boat over 200 miles when I go fishing, pulling it 70+mph,know what they say when trailering a boat,S-it happens! Those 4 raps of rope,2 of them poped!
Like I said,I built this boat, should I repair it,I have the know how or should I let a shop do it?The guys insurence is paying for alll the repairs, but I know whats in the boat. What ya'll think?

If you have the time and are like me you will probably want to do it yourself, like the orginal building of a boat it is a labor of love. No man has lived fully without building a boat however large or small--bob

Re: Rear ended boat

Get 2-3 estimates of the repair cost and just tell the INS you want the check and your stuff back...should be no problem...but let YOUR agent do the talking to the other party

That bites BIG TIME be honest did you cry? I would have!! If it were me Id probly lose my job because id spend all my time at the shop making sure they "did it right" and with love like you did when you did it the first time :) Then again if I had another project, I would just want my main use boat back ASAP

The shop you took it to for repair, you trust them to do a good job? Do they offer some type of guarantee for the work they do. You built the boat once, no point in doing it again if you trust these guys to do a good job. Plus you can always check up on them. Trying to work on both boats you are going to lose a lot of sea time. Gotta weigh the pros and cons of both and how long it would take you to do it. Just my 2cents worth. Good luck. Let us know what you decided. :)

Re: Rear ended boat

Prockvoan,

Why doesn't State Farm want to pay? I have them for my boat insurance (and auto, and home, and umbrella coverage) so I am very interested.

I have a stated value of the boat, motor & trailer at $5000. The policy says the boat is covered on the water, in my back yard or on the trailer being towed. I did have to give photos for their records.

You got me a bit nervous. What's the story? And what about the guy's insurance that hit you?

I smell 2 companies cutting a deal. Probably because you built it and there is no book value on your effort. I am starting to build mine, thanks for the wake up call. I would still jump them for repairs. Ask for their legal Dept. Tell them your so proud of the service that you are going to handout handbills explaining the wonderfull service they gave you. You can legaly hand out the truth. Tell them, 2 weeks, full check for all damages, hang up as soon as he starts crap. Do not talk till a check arrives.---------------I have come within 1 day of handing out my handbills in front of a NY Wall St. stock house.

Richard your a man after my own heart. If they say they insure it they should do so. The thing is he was rear ended why is the other guys insurance not paying? If he does not have insurance then State Farm should take care of it. They agreed it was worth 5000 dollars. Tell them to come pick it up and give you the 5000.

Re: Rear ended boat

What it comes down to is,the guy that hit me and myself both have State Farm insurance.Duel loss for them.
What they did do is pay for the motor and trailer, they were repaired. When I had pick up the boat to take it for the boat to be repaired, the motor cover was damaged from the wreck, and they don't what to replace it.I was told if that was the case, they would of totaled my boat out.At that point, they paid out $1498.84,a cover used was around $300 more.
After explaining that the boat was less then 1 year old from the rebuilt, they didn't what to hear it and gave me a hard time at that! The cost to have the boat repaired is $894.27.
So,at this point,it looks like I will have to bring an a attorney. That my fellow boats is a no win for all.The cost of insurence will go up from there.
Now,one thing I found out about State Farm is how there insurence works.I was told by my rep about 20 years ago that the way coverage works was;my truck would cover a boat and trailer on the road, home would cover it at the house and boat insurence would cover it in the water. That is how it use to be.NOW,my truck doesn't cover it on the road,my home doesn't cover it there. The boat covers itself everywere. Now here comes a biggie,if you and a buddy are going fishing and you use your truck to pull his or her boat,my insurence only covers the trailer up to $2500 cost,NOT whats on the trailer,ZERO!What is one to do?
All I can say is;do a check up on your insurence!!!!!!1

This is why I have Progressive. When I blew up my motor, tore the transom off the boat, they paid, no questions asked.

Re: Rear ended boat

Prockvoan,

It sounds like they have paid out to the book value of the motor/boat, right? If you have repaired the boat and done maintenance to cause it to have a greater value than book value, then you need to have the policy adjusted for the new value of the boat. You can not restore an old boat, have it totalled, then claim it is worth 20K when the book value is $500. You will get just $500.

Repair the boat, take pictures, and go to your agent and tell him you want a new policy based on the actual value of the boat, not book value.

My boat is probably smaller than yours, but still, with a stated value of $5000, it still only costs $104 for a years coverage through State Farm as a trailered boat.

Sorry to hear of your plight. Hope things improve for you in the future. Got any pictures of the boat and damage?

Mark.

EDIT:
Don't mean to sound callus. I also am not a state farm fan. I just have them and have had no problems. One thing to check out, when I was hit by another state farm insured auto, they waived the deductable on my claim. Should be the same for boats, no? You might be able to get a few more bucks if they didn't wave your deductable.

Re: Rear ended boat

What burns my @ss about this,State Farm is still getting paid by me every month for auto, home and boat insurance.I am paying for 2 cars/2 trucks, one home and 2 boats = around $6000.00 per year.If I were to hold out on paying them, would I have any insurance at all?
In the pass,I had never had any trouble with them. Now when I need them, they had treated me like I was at wrong and I am trying to take the to the cleaners.I told them that all I want is my things fixed, they don't what to even do that or the right thing.I will be shopping here soon!

I don't know how long you have been with them, but I would make it very clear to my agent that I am taking all of my business elsewhere! The true test of insurance is when you make a claim, if they aren't there for you....I wouldn't be there for them...let them know this.

I have a great idea. All of us who use this site. Put down what INS. CO. paid off with little hassel or long delays ( 30 days ) and close to what was reasonable and you are still with them. I have no claims. Yet :)
