You have an MR/Alpha One lower unit, so no pre-load pin. The pinion and forward and reverse push apart under load, hence the way the top drive shaft bearing is set up. To check the bearing, pull up on the shaft and turn it... It should feel smooth and tight...

Gaskets go on dry...

Drive update ok got new water pocket cover on and new pump assembly. I'm ready to attach the top to the bottom. Any hints on doing this. I'll be doing it by myself. I have the shift shaft full clockwise and got the prop locked and bungeed ccw. Got new oil seal o ring on also. Just one more question on the shift shaft all I have is a stainless steel washer. Thought I read somewhere there is suppose ti be a rubber washer also.

It does happen to the best, I find it easiest to turn drive up side down, then put the bottom into the top half

Ok update. Got drive back together. I'm wanting to repaint the gasket surface on drive. Question is I bought rattlecan primer and paint. I was wanting to brush it on though. Good or bad idea. Could I take the primer and paint and spray it in a cup or something so I could brush it on. Anybody ever do this

Why not just mask off the areas you don't want to paint?

Too simple?

Chris... ;)
