1987 omc 5.7. Jasper rebuild. Running 10 degrees btdc running mid grade fuel, 89 octane. is this within the correct spec? does having electric ignition over the old points change anything with timing?

No electronic ignition does not change your timing
I think this is way better then the old points and condenser
but would at this point go to a better stronger coil and better spark plug wires

Mallory requires a ballast resistor (same coil as your points). Follow the mallory instructions

new coil uses a resistor. previous owner installed electronic upgrade im not sure on what mallory unit or anything exactly. are electronic upgrades compatible with the stock coils for these engines? the coil i got is a direct replacement from sierra

you either have a mallory electronic pickup or a pertronix. you would have to look and follow their instructions.

looks like its the 3rd one you linked. i dont see anything about specific coils. is the sierra one viable? shouldnt ignition work with all other stock parts? the sierra is a direct replacement for the engine so should it work?

the third one is the standard pickup for non-converted Mallory dizzy.

look at the installation instructions for each one. they specifically call out primary coil winding resistance. I believe 1.5 ohm.

tech specs i found online are as follow for the coil i bought. i could test one in boat aswell precisely . what do you think, wrong coil or should it be good? idk exactly what model mallory i have numbers are to faded on unit
Tech Info:
Primary Resistance: 1.25/1.38 Ohms
Secondary Resistance: 9,000/12,000 Ohms

My Seloc shows 13 degrees base timing on my 1988 305, I would think 350 would be similar. 10 is a good start.

factory manual has 8 degrees, most i would run is 10 degrees

Seloc manuals are notorious for incorrect information.

I have a 1988 5.7 cobra combo and I am running at 3* BTC as prescribed by manual for running 87 Octane . Would that be wrong information from the manual ?

what manual?

you should be at 8 degree BTDC. that is where i was with my '88 VP 5.7 until I went to vortec heads, then I was at 12.
