Alpha shift problem

So I pulled my lower off to install a new impeller and while I was at it I pulled the upper off to replace the gasket. Had it in forward gear but during this process I had moved the shifter on the lower unit while greasing it some. So I spun it clockwise and spun the prop ccw and got it back in forward gear. Put it all back together and it was running and shifting fine until I docked it and got the trailer in the water and that's when I noticed I lost my forward gear. It was just rev up but not go into gear. Finally it popped into gear but I ended up losing it again. Got it home and pulled the lower off but nothing looks to be damaged at all. Do I just need to adjust my linkage??

Did you remember to install the washer that sits on top of the drive shaft in the lower? Might also help to know what your working on...

I did install the new rubber grommet that goes over the shaft and sits on the impeller housing. This is on a 250 6cyl with an MC1, or pre alpha upper, and gen 1 lower.

He means S/S washer. The one that goes on top of the rubber washer....

Oh, that was the one I was talking about. Thought there was some weird s shaped washer I didn't know about

I'm sorry I do have a washer. I was thinking of something else. Theres the washer and the cutter pin holding it all in place.

Washer and split pin are on the intermediate shift shaft. We're referring to the S/S washer on top of the rubber washer on the LOWER shift shaft.

Hmmm yeah I'm pretty sure it does not have that. I have the shaft coming out of the impeller housing and the thicker rubber ring that sits on top and that's all. When I pulled it apart there was no washer on the lower shaft.
