Bravo 1 U-joints

I have been having low speed vibration on my sterndrive and it is much more noticeable when turning hard to the left or right. I suspect that I might have a U-Joint bearing that is worn out. When I pulled the drive earlier in the year all the U-Joints looked good and were not loose. Can a U-Joint look good, but still cause a vibration? I thought about just replacing them, but when I looked up the part (865496A02) they are listed for $250 each. Is there another u-joint that can be purchased for a Bravo 1 drive? All the other U-joints that I have found are around $50, so I don't understand why the Bravo 1's are so expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Gimble bearing was replaced last year when I replaced the bellows and still looks good. I inspected u-joints at that time and they appeared good, but I’m not an expert on u-joints.

Stick you fingers inside the bearing and roll it around. If you feel any roughness then the noise would be coming from the bearing. If bearing is smooth as silk then could be the U joints

Look in the adults only in top of section there is U joint link in there somewhere

I did try and look. I must have clicked on the wrong section because I did not see it as a sticky when looking. Thanks for posting the link. I read through the thread and the link in there is broken to search for u-joints. The parts they list are for the older style bravo / alpha u-joints. My s/n bravo one uses a newer u-joint part number that for some reason is crazy expensive.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... The crosses get little ridges on the bearing surfaces, 'n will feel tight, but still chatter when turnin' or trimmin',.....

Is there anything special about the new style Bravo U-Joints (See pic below)? It's had to understand why they sell for $250 retail and the older style sells for around $75. I am assuming that the price is not for a pair of u-joints, but only one. Is that a correct assumption?

After I did what Alldodge recommended, and gimbal bearing proved to be smooth. I'd take U-joints apart and inspect. It is easy if you have OD stand and a few tools. Or, lay OD on a good strong bench. Be sure to mark which side (cup) goes back to yoke. They might develop wear patterns. I like using heavy c-clamps and lube to press them back into service. I have experienced truck u-joints getting grease ONLY on one side. Yours might be defective in that manner. I now prefer sealed u-joints. Most likely an auto parts store can match your exact u-joint and save you big bucks.
They will have to "mic" the dimensions if you can't find a # on them. I replaced an Alpha's joint years ago with an auto parts joint. It worked fine and save me big $$$.
Or, buy from Iboats. They are reasonable $$ and can match up items quicker than an auto parts store. Maybe new bravos are all SS or special designs? I doubt it! One of my Bravos' shaft, I discovered, is actually a cannibalized part from an Alpha. ( I bought used boat) I also have gimbal bearings ( spares) that require maintenance grease. Their parts numbers crossed referenced to Bravo 1s. Someone on this forum mentioned that new gimbal bearings are also sealed and no longer require grease. I can speak from decades of truck usage that the sealed stuff seems to last longer, regardless if I constantly maintained them. For decades, I deer hunted hundreds of miles away from my home in Alabama's mud and clay. The sealed stuff lasts longer. If my u-joints or Gimbal bearings were bad, Id try to go back with sealed stuff. Good luck and pray that your problem is not spline/coupler related. I just replaced a coupler

Merc is high, and if your not in a high torque motor could try Sierra 18-6406

Could be worst, the XR's cost 999

Would you consider a 300HP Mercruiser 350 Mag MPI a high torque motor?

No, most that have issues is the offshore folks.

Also should add is I try to stay away from Sierra because they (IMO) buy from lowest bidder
