I do not believe those parts on the side of the block are the shift DETENT parts !!----They are the shift interlock bits.------May allow the motor to be shifted in or out of gear at too high an RPM.----It also depends on what type of throttle control was used.----Single lever or dual lever.----Those missing parts suggest to me that there are issues with the powerhead.----Running poorly and hence the removal of those parts !!
Yes there is nothing stopping it from going back and forth. Needs to be hooked up at a minimum to the controls to test. I had it running without the lower end on it for 15 secs. But didn't have to worry because the shift rod want attached to anything

There are detent ba;;s that hold the shift dog in N F and reverse. They are on the propeller shaft.

Right, so it shouldn't slip.
Im just concerned, that i'f shifted to quickly from forward to reverse from the controls up front this could be an issue. But if you guys thinks it's good to go than I'll probably be ready to rock next summer with a fully tuned up 35hp with a back up 1960 johnson 40hp

If it is at all posable to shift into gear or from forward to reverse at to high a rpm. dont do it. very dangerous to you and your engine.

If you look at the pics I posted you can see the throttle cant to go to far in netural and reverse with my setup. Dont see anything in your pics that would keep your engine from being shifted at to high a rpm

???----Post #1 clearly shows the shift interlock pieces are missing !!!----Likely removed because motor was not running properly.----People do that as a last resort to keep a motor from going to the " fix it shop " and getting a diagnosis.

The detent balls on the propeller shaft hold the shift dog in neutral.
If you look at my picture thumbnail 22 and 4b that detent holds all gears. Not sure if you would have the same setup

???----The balls in the propeller shaft are for NEUTRAL only mate !!------They ensure that some effort is required and helps avoid folks from easing these motor into gear.-----Easing them into gear does all the damage.

Right. So what would hold his engine in forward and reverse? Just curious. The shifter? Or something on the engine like mine.

My bad. The detent balls on the propeller shaft hold the shift dog in NETRUAL ONLY.

The magneto plate rotates.-----That part shown can then not move up until throttle is reduced again.----Prevent shifting out of gear at full throttle.------Also prevents too much throttle applied with motor in neutral.-----Not hard to find those pieces in my opinion.
