Hydro-mechanical, as far as i know. The control box has 1978 stamped on it, assuming it was the original, and not sure it would work with another LU. It also takes over a quart of LU oil to fill up, and from what i can tell the only one that does is that particular 150849S LU.

Other forum, info from ebay seller and local mechanic. They had stated I would need to replace the lower unit and intake manifold.

I don't know, as the control box doesn't shift forward. When it goes into reverse, it appears to go forward, but I don't have a point of reference to compare.

Never mind then-----The control boxes all operate the same way !!----The different motion for shift rod is done with linkages on the MOTOR. -----The control boxes all move the same way.

So what about the cables? Do they fall connect the same? Not sure why people just trying to confuse me. Thanks for clarifying. So in theory is could use a new control box, with wiring harness ?

Correct----Sorry, I can not see , feel or hear your motor.-----If modifications have been made from factory original.-----If I had an original 1978 V-6 ( I have more than one V-6 ) then I would use a 1995 control box.---Basically plug and play !!----End of the story.

I bought a brand new omc control box and wiring harness and new cables, but the new cables didn't seem to work.

What do you mean by ----" cables didn't seem to work "----Did not move correctly or maybe a simple clip missing to hold them on the linkages ?
