Aloha everyone,
Was hoping someone here could help me with a compatibility question. I bought a 24’ Skipjack with the motor already removed so I don’t know what was in it before (I believe it was a Volvo570). The guy before me bought a Volvo 5.7gxi-a that he was going to instal to repower but never got around to it. I’m ready to install the motor but I realized the leg that’s currently attached does not fit this motor. I believe it’s a 290. It came with an extra leg (sx I think) that does fit. The issue is the coupler splines with the motor and the splines on the bell housing for the 290 don’t match. Is there a flex plate I can buy to replace the coupler, mount to the flywheel and fit the 290 leg? I’m trying to avoid having to remove and fiberglass a new transom shield if I can buy something that allows me to keep the leg that’s currently on it. I’ll attach some pictures. Thanks in advance

That is an AQ series drive (at least it looks like it in the thumb nail from my phone, the pics are not loading on vacation)

The SX drive gets sold for parts, so does the coupler from behind the motor and probably the flywheel if its a 168 tooth

The AQ series drive on the boat and the PDS gets used. You need a 153 tooth flywheel to mount the PDS. Suggest rebuilding the PDS (look under my started threads)

You need a PDS drive plate. If you need one, PM me. I have a pile of AQ SBC parts

So is the 290 an AQ series? And in order to use that one, all I’d have to do is get a different flywheel and a PDS drive plate? I have the 14inch on the motor currently. Do I need to buy a new starter too since I’d be changing the tooth pattern? Thank you in advance

Yes, you would also need a different starter

Your flywheel wont fit the PDS housing

do you have the pins to mount the 290 to the transom?
there will be 5 pins total, the helmet pin, about 1-1/4" in diameter and about 1-1/2" long held to the drive with two bolts

the pivot pins, about 3/4" diameter, about 2.5" long, notch in the side and a screw driver slot on one end

the cylinder pins, 1/2" diameter, about 3" long, one end would have a cotter pin, the other a flange

you will need a new water hose and water inlet connection

the SX drive wont do you any good, neither will the short SX flywheel housing. unless you put a complete new transom on the boat. so i would sell those parts

since you still have the 570. any idea what is wrong with that? you can use the flywheel that is mounted to the 570

I would rebuild the PDS housing. here is my thread on it. (had to rebuild it after photobucket broke the internet) https://forums.iboats.com/threads/pds-shaft-issues.687012/

I have all the pins because the 290 was actually already mounted, I removed it and have all the pins.
I don’t have the 570 anymore, the old owner disposed of it. I could try to track him down again because I’ll also need that starter if he still has the motor somewhere.
Is the PDS housing a routine maintenance thing or is there another reason I should rebuild it?

that is good, those pins are worth their weight in platinum

no need for the starter, buy new PMGR

new flywheel is $55. so its up to you to track down the prior owner. however the exhaust manifolds would also be helpful

my guess is the bearings are sloppy and the seals only last about 15 years..... so yes, its a maintenance thing (hint, all boats are designed to last about 15 years, then need a major over-haul)

make sure to inspect the PDS shaft itself. I found mine had a fracture. had i not caught it, I would have been rebuilding broken parts (especially with the pork chop motor)

Or can I get away with the 168 teeth since it has the smaller 12” diameter
Welcome Aboard,........ Nope, no such thing,.....

You need the 153 tooth, 'n yer block has to have the straight across bolt pattern drilled, 'n tapped,....
If it don't have both starter bolt patterns, you'll need a different block,....

Did you see the one on the link that Scott shared? It says 168 tooth but 12”. That’s why I was confused. I wonder which is the typo, diameter or tooth count before I order it.
I stole this from a Chevy forum. Does that seem about right?
