I have a 2006 Bravo Single prop S/N OW296009. I had the bellows replaced a few years ago and they replaced the shift cables. I started the boat the other day and it wouldn't go into forward. I found the jam nut on the shift cable was loose and the cable had turned to the point that there was so much sloop the cable housing came out of the bracket when I put it in forward. I pulled the two cotter pin, removed the cable from the bracket and screwed the cable end as far as it would go by hand and tightened the jam nut by hand. I out the cable back on the bracket and inserted the cotter pins. I am now able to shift into forward and reverse. This was able to get me going until i returned. I would like to adjust this cable correctly and tighten up the jam nut.
Can I screw in threaded rod all the way into the cable and then tighten the jam nut? I also read on the web a tool to adjust the cable isn't necessary. If I put the drive in neutral and the shifter is in neutral i can adjust the barrel so the barrel and guide fit on the shift bracket. The post went on to say the gear case has a detent the centers the gear case in neutral.
Is this a recommended procedure? It seems to work ok, could i be doing any damage or operating in an unsafe method?
Thanks
Ron
