1985 Evinrude 25 Starter Wiring

Needed to rebuild carb so had to remove starter bracket and disconnect some wires to get to the carb nut. My dumb self did not take a picture. Got called away for a week and now can't figure out wiring.

The wire in the black box is a ground running back to the battery. There are two wires in the yellow box. One is the positive wire from the battery to the solenoid. The other runs from the push button start to the solenoid. So far so good. All seems to make sense.

What is the wire in the red box? It's length and bend suggest it goes on the same bolt as the ground from the battery, but ugly things happen when I do that. The wire seems to be terminated on the case near where the tiller enters the case, but hard to see so not positive about that.

Any idea where that wire goes or do I have this all screwed up?

Got a better view of it. The mystery wire is a ground that is terminated and screwed to the case near where the fuel line enters the case.

Starting to think it's a ground for the solenoid, but I don't remember removing any wires from the side posts on the solenoid.

If that is a tiller motor the solenoid is grounded through the neutral safety switch.

It is not a ground for the solenoid !----What is your motor doing or not doing.----I am well aware that 12 volts , simple circuits and wires can be really confusing to some.----So tell us what is happening !

If you have a push button start here is how your wiring should go.
#1 + battery cable to one side of the solenoid on the big terminal.
#2 1 wire from push button goes to the + battery cable side of the solenoid
#3 Other push button wire goes to 1 of the small terminals on the solenoid
#4 other small terminal on solenoid is connected to the neutral safety switch.
#5 Red wire from rectifier goes to the + battery cable side of the solenoid. (should have 3 wires on the battery cable side of the solenoid.
#6 Other big post on solenoid is connected to the Starter motor. ( 1 wire on that side)
#7 all grounds get attached to the ground screw with the - battery cable.

here is how they did it in 1983... it is probably close to what you have now on a 85 the basic wiring concept does not change much

I don't think the OP has a remote model. I did not see the red plug in the pic.

This would be an early 90s rope start. Maybe this looks familiar.
