Ford 302 pinging

Might want to read up on how the enrichment system works on the Rochester 2bbl. If you're getting pinging at WOT then if it is a carb related problem, adjusting the idle system won't have much if any effect on that problem.
We had a Rochester 2GV on our '72 Chev Impala 350 and I always thought that engine in that size car (4200 lbs) needed a 4bbl, in fact our next GM full size was a '75 Olds Delta 88 also with a 350 but with a Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl which performed noticably better.
Something is just odd about a Rochester (division of GM) on a Ford engine!
Fords should have Autolites/Motorcraft, or even a Holley (if in vehicles) or Holleys Marine carbs if in a boat lol. However I have read that Chry Co used Q-Jets on certain Mopars and so did Ford, on certain V8 applicaitons. Guess they couldn't get enough Carters or Motorcrafts/Autolites in those years.

I'm not.oposed to changing carbs. I went with the 2gv because that's what was on there. If there's a better solution then I'm all ears

Well go they this one & see if you can get it dialed in better.
If not & you want to keep your 2 bbl intake you can use a Holley 2bbl 500 CFM marine carb; if not opposed to changing the intake to a 4 bbl, Holley or Edelbrock both can be bought new. The problem with all Rochesters is production ceased 32 years ago so anyone you buy is usually “remanufactured” but maybe not set up right for your marine engine.

I would probably run a 600 CFM Holley.

However, your idea of a fuel gauge is a good plan. Take it out and run it

There were 2 types of anti siphon valves. Aluminum and brass. The aluminum ones have given problems in the past. The brass ones are the better ones. If your fuel pressure gets low at full throttle that could be the source. Try to have the 6 gallon tank ready to switch over when you run the boat.
The Rodchester that you now have is a real marine carburetor?

Ya this engine had the 2 barrel rochester when I bought it so I just replaced the carb with the same. I've got all the gas out and am going to clean tank and replace filters and start over
fWIW looks like these came with both Holleys and Rochesters originally

Thinking about I may have used brass air fittings. I'm guessing I should change them to anti siphon.

I've never heard of anti siphon valves so I apologize if it was the fittings I used possibly causing issues

It is big enough for your application. A 5.0 engine up to 5 k rpm doesnt need much.

That's inside my choke. Is there something missing that connects to that rod with hole in it

That looks like it might have been a hot air choke instead of the well type choke common on Rochesters, there was a little piston inside that under vacuum pulled the choke plate open after the engine starts.
looky here.
was it converted to an electric choke?
