Hello to all from Northern Vermont, hang in there spring is coming!! Well, I came across this boat and engine for sale (price was not specified in the add) I didn't think much of it until, I saw the what make (year unknown) the engine was. A 40 HP Evinrude twin cylinder engine, tied to a 15 (or 18 foot Starcraft boat) with trailer. The previous owner had passed away, and the seller knows nothing about boats or engines. So this 40 HP Evinrude looks to be a 67 68??? Seems to be all there, compression seems to be there as well, but the boat needs some TLC but again, it's all there. Now I already have my boat with engine and everything works 100% so I really don't need another, but I offered this guy $500 and he accepted without any thought. My thinking is, get the engine for parts ( or a spare ) if it's close to my 1968 Evinrude 40 Hp. What do you guys think? I mean for $500 boat, trailer, and engine, even for parts, worth it??

$500 to haul it away would be more appropriate

Uncovered

Bow down
Fiberglass boat

Just 4 big red flags after brief scan of pix, there are likely others

If the engine is actually compatible with yours, then it might make sense. Heck, it even has a prop on it, so even without the engine possibilities, you could sell parts off the hull (chrome, windshield, and shifter) and the trailer- maybe even sell the trailer outright or convert it into a flatbed.
As far as the hull, as it sits I‘m afraid it’s a lost cause because it’s been exposed to the elements for awhile. That will quickly rot out the structural stringers, transom, and deck. If you have the time and patience it could be repaired but it’s rarely worth it.

It was a wonderful motor when new.----Electric shift with generator.-----Model # is found above the transom clamps or on the starboard transom bracket.----Find it and post it.-----There could be a lot of work to make the boat usable.

If it truly is an Evinrude (white), then it is a 1967 Lark Electric shift. There are some $$$$ parts in it. The shift switch in the remote control comes to mind. But we don't know if it is any good. Feeling lucky?seite_08_09.jpg

Motor will need a complete evaluation before spending beer tokens on it.---Compression test.-----Ignition coils.----Carburetor clean.-----New impeller ----Type C-gear oil ( premium blend ) for lower unit.-----Oil container must say " for electric shift " on it.

sounds like a 2 winter project if compression is ok , GC not cracked from frost cowl available ...trailer is an easy fix... bearings maybe and a can of paint to look like new....

the boat .... well fiberglass doesn't rot but does soak water but this book will guide you
just buget 10$ a week and it is paid off in one year .

all you need if you go for it... is time, patience, money and approval from the madam. :) i've restored bigger :) ...shoud've kept that Crosby :-(

Well i did think of this, but i also saw some potentail here as well, i do get your point and have thought about this even after i looked at the boat. But the great thing is i have my boat already finished and already on the water after doing some work to it, so this would be no different i guess..

You know that is a great question, i do see some potential in the boat, but the great thing is i already have one of my own, and it's all fixed up and running 100% But the engine on this boat is rare ( i think if i'm correct) got some good seats to, shifter, cables and such. If that's a LARK 40 HP that would be nice, i did spin the flywheel, and the compression was there, the whole thing is fiberglass so hmm tough choice..

Yes it could be alot of work, and as i told others at least i have mine already finished and running 100%. if that engine is a LARK is that good? or if the engine does even run, this is a tough call to make!! But i could (i repeat could...) have a nice spare engine out of this if anything. my Evinrude is a manual shift, and runs so nice so hmm...

By the looks of the fishing line on the lower unit you have to wonder if the previous owner looked at it or did maintenance ?----Yes they are a nice / simple / easy to maintain motor.-----Even the electric shift / reliable is simple for me.

Lark is the name for the electric shift with generator model.

This is correct and i understand this, a small part of me doesn't want to get this wreck, but....another bigger part sais it would be nice to have a spare engine, with some spare parts, like, controls, cables, wiring, etc etc now again granting that the engine does run you know, and the boat itself, well, that's a different story so. I go back in the morning to give the guy a deposite on it so i'm going to look for #'s on the engine and maybe clean the boat out a little bit. But will post pictures on what i find..

The control only has a throttle cable.-----Will not work with a standard shift motor.

Oh ok my 68 is a manual shift and runs very well, this is a tough call dunno if i'll buy this wreck but there could be potential here, Glad i have one that's already complete and running good

Oh ok so it won't work with my manual shift then i take it, if not that's ok part of me want's this and if theengine runs half way decent it could be a good spare engine so hmm.. tough call
