Hi,
been working on the engine for a while. Soon a compression test. But then I saw this part on the side of the block. Does anyone have an idea what this is used for?
And should I "adjust" something?

Thx Yorick

looking at the rust streaks, it looks like you have a freeze crack in the block already.

You mean a oil-drain? Because I can easily reach the oil-plug in the bottom pan. Meaning I would not need this then?
No, cooling water drain.

you need that item for winterizing to drain the water from the block when the temperatures get to 32 degrees or colder

99.9995% probability of a block crack.

post a pick of the source of the rust streaks. most likely a 6-8" crack in the block

Will try to have a look the coming days.... Could also be located behind the exhaust manifold I guess?

should be about an inch below the head/block joint, under the manifold.

Thanks Scott.
Will see. Could be that the rebuild has ended prematurely....

that is up to you. used running engines from pickup trucks are cheap. the 250 cubic inch motor was used from the early 60's to about 1984

Thanks for the picture!!! Makes it more clear now.
And I presume I would not have detected this with a compression test?

Mine was like that when I got it. I wire wheeled the area, wiped down with acetone and jb welded it. Before the jb dried I dabbed it with a rag so it looked like cast iron, let dry and painted the area. Can’t tell it was cracked. 7 years and it’s still holding. If there are internal cracks you will get water in the oil. Mine doesn’t. Got lucky.
