I have a 1994 evinrude 140hp v4 (crossover I believe.). After running at wot for a mile or so it will start cutting out and will only run smoothly at about half throttle. I've replace the power pack, plug, wires, ignition coils and rebuilt all.4 carburetors. Any suggestions?

It is a looper design.-----Perhaps it is going into ---S. L. O. W.----Have you checked water pump impeller?

Could be fuel supply. Does the primer bulb go flat? You could run it on a portable tank and see if that helps.

Have not check impeller but the stream is good. I think it's a crossflow(the trim button are on the starboard side).I have it on a portable tank now. Came off of a 94 glastron. I put it on a fiberglass jon boat. On the glastron it behaved the opposite. Ran like crap for about the 1st 5 miles or so and would just take off and run good. Thanks

Well----1985 was the last production year for the 140 HP crossflow.----Post pictures of powerhead or post model #.-----Hard to help folks if motor details are vague I think.

Ok my apologies racerone. It seems there is conflicting data on the motors. I can post a pic later when I get a chance. Can it have good **** flow and still have a bad impeller?

On many motors the water coming from the tell tale does NOT go through the engine block !----You could have internal blockage of water jackets.

Thanks racerone. Is there a fix or something I can check. The last time out the stbd side cylinders felt noticbly hotter than the port side. And is the S.L.O.W. a function of this particular motor

Still do not know what motor you have !---Crossflow V-4 never offered the S.L.O.W. feature I believe.

There were no Crossflow 140s in 1994, they were discontinued in the mid 1980s, when a 90 degree Looper was introduced

As per post #5-----Hard to convince folks that motors are not all the same.----Need proper input from these posters.

Ok. I just read up on the S.L.O.W.. The oil reservoir was removed when I got it so I just pre mix. There was an alarm that was Beeping that was silenced by a mechanic that I took it to for this cutting out problem and he said it was the power pack. $500 later and I still.have the problem. How can I tell if it's the S.L.O.W. feature. Thanks again

When they took the motor off the glastron they cut all the wires and destroyed the shifter/throttle. So I used an old ship master throttle and shifter I had. And just spliced together matching wires. There were couple of wires that couldn't figure out where they went (couple blacks, a purple and maybe a gray) so I just nutted them off. Since the motor started i figured i was good to go. But Is it possible that there was a wire at the ignition switch that could be causing the S.L.O.W. to activate?

Maybe I should start from the beginning. I purchased 1994 glastron/140hp evinrude in 2023. The seller told me that it cutout intermittently and he thought it was one of the carbs. It was also hard to start and rough idling. I used it for a few weeks before taking it to a mechanic to rebuild carbs. He told me it was the power pack and replaced(not fixed). I took it back to the same mechanic and they said they did not won't to work on it because of is age. So being frustrated i had them replace the evinrude with yamaha 150. With too much time on my hands over the winter I decided to put the evinrude on a jon boat that had a 1979 50hp merc with curroding wire issues. When reconnecting the cut wires from the boat swap I had 3 or 4 wires that did not seem to affect the motors operation. I assumed they were tach and other gauges and just wire nutted them. Since putting it on the jon boat the evinrude has went from intermittent cutout, hard to start cold and rough idle to easy cold starts, idles nicely to continuous cutout after a mile or so. I have replaced the power pack, spark plugs/wires, ignition and rebuilt the carbs coils. The impeller appears to be newer. I'm sure I've left out a few details but I pretty sure this cover s the important parts. Thanks again and sorry for the confusion.

Replaced both thermostats. And resealed impeller. Tell tale flow is quicker and better. Impeller housing seal was blown out on one side. Both heads are running about 140 degrees according to temp.gun Starboard temp sensor was sitting on top of top plug wire. Will get out on the river ASAP. Hopefully fixed.
