I like the one where he tests rotella and it has the worst flat tappet cam wear of all the tested oils.

Gee, I suppose using the oil actually rated and recommended by the OEMs for four cycle marine engines is not the way to go. We should exercise our freedom to use whatever oil we want, damn the OEM recommendations!

Has anyone considered the fact that an occasional engine failure might be caused by a bad engine and not necessarily by the oil ? When companies are making thousands of motors every year, you bound to get some bad ones. Been a boat owner for well over 60 years and always used quality brand name oils, just like my vehicles. Followed recommendations by the mfgr. Never had a serious motor issue. Stop trying to save a buck and use the proper lube.

Curious as to what makes you think that the merc/honda looks superior?

I've said it before and I'll repeat:
do your own research by doing oil analyses
you will know for sure if that oil is good enough
I have and I can say the Merc oil definitely stays in grade, consistently. Not saying others don't.
The price of the Merc/Quicksilver oil has really gone up, so I am open to trying others, like Valvoline VR-1 20/50. It is literally half the price of the Merc oil. Now the Merc oil's claim to fame (in part) is it does not use VI improvers to span that 25--40 viscosity range. Does that make it better? Not sure but it for sure does stay in grade.

Well my take on that is that Mercury , Honda etc dont make oil , they get something that meets their standards , wether they just grab something off the shelf or get a refinery to make something to their spec ...whatev , then they stick their label on it.
You can be sure that branded oil is good stuff ....but its not the only option . If one wants to be sure your giving your motor a fair go but cant be arsed looking at oil spec's and reviews go for the branded oil , but if you want to save some money look around. I use the same type of full synth oil in my outboards as I put in my cars and motorbikes .

Guess you missed the part about better reduction in foaming and corrosion protection in humid environment

No , I didnt , I think that largely bollocks that Outboard manufacturers tell you to get you to buy their overpriced oil .
I drive my cars in the rain ,I ride my quad thru 2 feet of water and dont have issues with humidity inside my motors ....as for foaming ...news to me ...Ive never seen foam coming out a breather .....maybe if I overfilled my motors ...but no .
I have never ...ever.... had an engine fail due to any oiling issue .
I gotta say that some of the motors I have seen on this site .....I would be ashamed to be caught with my motor is such poor condition ...dirt and corrosion wise , but thats on the outside .
Im not saying your all a bunch of dummies....far from it , Im just not buying into the whole special oil for small ( like not fishing boat diesel or ship motors )marine engines . We get the same thing with motorbikes .... the "gotta use motorbike oil " .....once ,in about 1986 I put castrol GTX (car oil ) in a bike ...that I bought at a motorbike shop ...and the clutch slipped . For years I used Valvoline XLD in everything ...now I use Penrite HPR 5 or 10w40 ......even the ole Briggs and Stratton mower gets it and that motor is 36 years old now .
😁Im going on a bit coz its better than having to talk to my sis-in-law.

Yes, you did not understand what he was saying and how the test were run. No one mentioned of over filling for the reason and were not tested as such.

Car/Truck/Side by side/Others, none of these motors get up around 3500 rpm and higher and stay there for hours. The Foam test does just that and proved that auto oils are designed for lower rpm. Marine oils are far superior to stop it than other oils. Now that said he also stated these oils are not designed to last very long as in more than one season. So there is a pro and a con to marine oils.
