I have been using WD40 for years primarily to displace water and use as a light lubricant. I was wondering what others use, for what and why?

There is a "tips" post on WD40 if you use Search that has some neat stuff but I'm wondering about around motors in marine use.

There's a product we get down here in NZ called CRC which is very similar to WD40 - do you have that product in the States ?

There's a variation of it called CRC-Marine which I use for the boat. I couldn't say whether it's better or worse than WD40 though - they both seem to produce a similar result. Amazingly useful stuff I have to say.

WD stands for Water Displacement ... I spray a touch of it in all my fuel tanks on my lawn mowers in the fall

Yeah, we have it 62_K, It's much better than WD40. WD40 is way over hyped as any kind of lubricant. If you use it to lube up an enertia block, in an over and under shotgun, it will gum up in a matter of weeks and you'll never get off your second shot.

I thing CRC also has a heavier preservative lubrication spray as well. Works great for coating metal and not evaporating away.

I use a product called 'inox'. Its in a pressure pack the same as WD40 & CRC. Absolutely brilliant, been using it for years.

Aldo

Re: WD40 or What????

I think WD 40 pretty good as a metal protector or to displace water. Good inside the distributor after someone has run thur a big puddle and got water in the cap.
As a lubricant I will not use it as it gums up bad as it dries out. Use it on your roller tip fishing poles and you will be rebuilding them. I use Silicone, Teflon, 3 in 1, or 5w30 moble one as a light oil.

Still I carry a can of WD40 in the boat to use as a metal protectant.

Has anyone used a product called LPS? Opinions?

I have used it for some applications and like it, but wonder if it is any good for fogging cylinders for the winter.

WD40 is actually crap compared to most spray lubes.I use pb blaster for penetrating and "one lube" made by slick 50 for lubricant.Wd 40 is gone almost immediately and One lube stays for months.I used to use super lube synthetic but I dont see it anymore in the stores.Charlie

I'm not going to run out to the garage and look but I'm fairly sure that WD40 does not say lubricant on it.

Better than WD as it doesn't leave a greasy film

Re: WD40 or What????

I use it exclusively in my workshop for everything (see listed uses). My wife uses it at home. I always carry a can or two in my car and boat. It ain't no snake oil (is that the right term for unrealistic claims?). I have and continue to use it for everything - just finished polishing the boat with it. Doesn't smell, doesn't feel greasy, doesn't wash off.

I agree that the website lists some 'hard to believe' uses and I was initially sceptical, but after using it for years now - I'm sold. As I said, brilliant stuff.

Aldo

This INOX looks like vegetable oil! Maybe it's PAM in disguise! :D

This stuff has a myriad of uses.

"Spray INOX on the outside of bone, waste meat and seafood bins and waste food compactors to stop any spread of fly maggots."

"FOOD GRADE APPROVAL:
Type A lubricant ( A.Q.I.S.) D.P.I. AUSTRALIA
Approval Primary Production
Department of Agriculture
UNITED STATES of AMERICA "

My favorite lubricant for hard to reach places and when you need a long lasting penetrating type lube is motor cycle chain lube. This stuff sprays out in a liquid and very quickly changes to a thick sticky lube.

PB blaster, chain lube and a can of brake parts cleaner are the most frequently used lube/penatrating oil/cleaner in my shop.

thanks for the inox tip.

Re: WD40 or What????

I don't think anything comes close to Boeshield T9 at protecting metal but it costs more. I have tried LPS2, LPS3 and CRC 6-56. The Boeshield lasts longer and does not appear to affect the rubber. I spray pure silicon on the rubber prior to spraying the Boeshield just to be sure.

The WD-40 is just water displacing and dries immediately. LPS1 is similar.

Re: WD40 or What????

Anyone uses plain ole diesel?

We pour it into closed trailer tubes (through a hole with a threaded plug), so they don't rust from the inside, and I wipe out the cement mixer drum with it to stop it from clagging up. I wipe the outboard with a diesel-soaked rag after a day in the sea (20 years old and still no sign of corrosion) (Nah - the outboard, stupid!). It polishes, too - but NOT on fibreglass hulls! It 'creeps' just as good as wd40, and seems to stay for longer. And it stinks, so you know you've used it.

Diesel Fuel?? Awfully expensive polishing agent? Don't light a smoke by it.
